Casually, game designer Ed Annunziata, who created Ecco the Dolphin, recently disclosed that they’re working on updates (or improvements) of the original SEGA Genesis games. Back in the beginning of this year, trademarks for the series were detected.
Additionally, there’s some thrilling updates as a fresh game from the same series is being developed. As of now, the official website is ticking down, indicating its release date on 25th April, 2026.
The announcement emerged during a chat on Xbox Wire, however, it fits perfectly into Sega’s ongoing plan of reviving its classic intellectual properties. Additionally, sequels for beloved titles such as Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi are currently being worked on.
As a member of the original team, I’m excited to share that we’re diving back into our roots and giving the classic Ecco the Dolphin and Tides of Time games a fresh coat of paint for a modern gaming experience!
Next up, we’ll be creating an innovative third game that caters to modern gaming styles and advanced GPU capabilities. Keep an eye on eccothedolphin.com for updates!
It’s clear that Annunziata didn’t explicitly state which platforms were involved, but given where this interview was published, it seems highly likely that an Xbox Series X|S version will materialize. Moreover, if a project is intended for Xbox, it’s almost a given that it will also be released on the widely used PS5.
In 1992, Ecco the Dolphin made its debut on the SEGA Genesis, offering a distinctively fresh action-adventure journey with elements like time travel and environmental themes. The subsequent installment, titled The Tides of Time, refined the initial game’s challenge level while advancing the narrative further.
Subsequent additions were made to the series, such as the child-friendly Ecco Jr., and Sony was even involved in publishing the PlayStation 2 version of the Dreamcast game Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of Time, which is currently the latest installment in the franchise.
Over the years, we’ve found ourselves drawn to the idea of Ecco the Dolphin. However, its gameplay feels rather dated when compared to more recent games. With the upcoming remasters and a new game in development, let’s hope they address these aging aspects effectively.
