The high-seas pirate adventure game titled Captain Blood was initially unveiled back in 2003, promising hack and slash gameplay inspired by the 1922 novel of the same name by Rafael Sabatini. However, eager fans have been anticipating this nautical escapade for more than a decade now.

The highly anticipated pirate game by Akella (known for Sea Dogs and Pirates of the Caribbean), Captain Blood, had generated a lot of excitement back in 2004 when it was showcased at E3. However, things took a turn for the worse as development issues cropped up, causing the game to be passed around among different publishers and developers. The game experienced numerous setbacks, including legal disputes, before being given a tentative release date in 2006 for both PC and Xbox platforms. Unfortunately, that planned launch didn’t happen as intended.

Further setbacks ensued, and fresh strategies were devised for a release on Xbox 360. However, Captain Blood became entangled in the passage of time when its prospective publisher faced bankruptcy in 2010. Determined not to see the dream of Captain Blood sink, ex-Akella developers regrouped and established their own publishing company, breathing life once more into the pirate action-adventure game for a new era. Eventually, they launched the game on May 6.

In this freshly launched game, players find themselves assuming the role of Captain Blood, a formidable sea rover known for his love of grog and admiration of maids. Sailing across the 17th-century Spanish Main as this swashbuckling pirate, you’re tasked with rescuing the magistrate’s daughter from abductors. Alongside your motley band of pirates, you engage in fierce battles against countless adversaries using a classic hack-and-slash approach.

Players can choose from an assortment of historically accurate pirate-themed weapons such as cutlasses, pistols, muskets, and even throwing knives. These tools are ready for use, allowing players to swiftly defeat opponents using combo attacks and finishers. The objective is to meet the “guts” prerequisite of “guts and glory,” which implies bravery and grandeur.

Let’s wish that game enthusiasts across the globe can delight in these creations, acknowledge their efforts, and encourage future preservation of canceled masterpieces such as Captain Blood, just as we cherish them today.

Captain Blood’s campaign is set up in traditional missions, leading to exciting close-quarter fights against rival pirates on the ship decks and gunfights using your ship’s cannons for an abundance of thrilling action. The gameplay from the Xbox 360 era features quick time events, a straightforward narrative, and a retro art style that is quite violent in a humorous manner.

The audio of the game, initially captured during the 2010s, enhances the sense of nostalgia as the game undergoes a modern update, ensuring it remains appealing to newer generations.

The much-anticipated launch of this game, after 15 years of dedicated work by its creators and distributors, is a testament to their unwavering commitment. In essence, this release serves as recognition for the countless hours they invested without due acknowledgment or the opportunity to witness it being played by gamers. As expressed by Artem Shchuiko and Oleg Kapovskiy, co-founders of SNEG and former members of Akella, “This launch is a tribute to their perseverance. We hope that players everywhere will take pleasure in this creation, acknowledge the effort put into it, and support the revival of other projects like Captain Blood that were unfortunately cancelled.

When we initially discovered that the game wasn’t going to launch, it was a crushing blow – it seemed as though all our tireless efforts had evaporated without a trace,” expressed Sergey Makeev, the ex-project manager of Captain Blood at Seawolf Studio.

Makeev declared that the latest unveiling of Captain Blood was a source of great pride and happiness for everyone involved in the project. If you’ve ever felt disheartened by the shelving of an eagerly awaited title, Captain Blood serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that revivals can indeed occur. While you eagerly anticipate updates, why not grab a copy of Captain Blood on Xbox and channel your frustration against some unsavory pirates?
