Sutekh comeback ‘proves Doctor Who hasn’t severed its roots’, says Russell T Davies

Sutekh comeback ‘proves Doctor Who hasn’t severed its roots’, says Russell T Davies

As a long-time fan of Doctor Who, I was both thrilled and nostalgic when I heard that Sutekh, a classic villain from my childhood, made a reappearance in the latest season finale. The decision to bring back this iconic foe was a deliberate one, according to Russell T Davies, and it served as a reminder that the show’s new home on Disney Plus doesn’t mean it’s abandoning its roots.

In the latest Doctor Who season, promoted as a fresh beginning to attract new audiences, many viewers were taken aback when the two-part finale introduced the arch-nemesis as Sutekh, an age-old foe originally appeared in the 1975 series “Pyramids of Mars.”

Currently, Davies justifies his reason for resurrecting Sutekh in the series. He intends this move as a deliberate gesture to reassure fans that the Disney Plus agreement doesn’t signify a departure from the show’s origins. Moreover, it offers an inspiration drawn from Marvel Cinematic Universe’s WandaVision.

In an interview for Doctor Who Magazine, he shared his recollection: Nicola Shindler, a producer I collaborate with, was thrilled beyond measure by the introduction of Agatha Harkness in WandaVision. She considered it the most ingenious twist.

“I inquired if she was familiar with Agatha Harkness. Her response was, ‘I’m sorry, I have no clue.’ It intrigues me how a character from the folklore can be unfamiliar to a contemporary audience, yet still provide an exciting discovery for them.”

Davies added: “Moreover, joining Disney Plus is a thoughtful decision to revive an ancient foe from the BBC days – we’ve even recruited the same performer (Gabriel Woolf) once again. Exploring the past is an engaging experience. It offers excitement for new fans, and for longtime viewers, it’s a satisfying payoff.”

Based on my own experiences, I can confidently say that the convenience of the modern world is truly astounding. In contrast to the past where locating information required extensive efforts and resources, today we have the internet at our fingertips. I remember times when I would pore over dusty encyclopedias or wait for weeks for library books to arrive. But now, with just a few keystrokes or a voice command, I can access an abundance of information about any topic under the sun.
