Only a handful of television series can boast a journey as tumultuous as SWAT, a program that miraculously resurfaced after being canceled not once, but twice. Now, it’s set to make a comeback yet again, marking its eighth season on American screens.
Once more, Shemar Moore plays Hondo in the upcoming season, but due to changes within the main cast, we have a somewhat revised team for this round.
On the other hand, the show persists in focusing on the SWAT team from the LAPD, just like before, and it remains within the same universe as the crime drama series The Shield, created alongside Shawn Ryan.
Regarding the possibility of the show extending past season 8, Ryan has expressed uncertainty to Deadline, stating that although it seems to be well-liked by executives at CBS and viewers alike, he’s not sure what the future holds.
He clarified that he’s unsure about the future plans. He also mentioned his uncertainty regarding the standards for renewal, suggesting that they might differ significantly from previous years.
He expressed, “We’ll keep crafting a fantastic series that our viewers adore, and time will tell how things unfold. Over the past few seasons, this is exactly what we’ve been doing, and we’re incredibly proud of the show’s heritage.
Filming for season 8 has been postponed due to the Los Angeles wildfires, although it remains unclear if this will impact the show’s airing timeline.

Will there be a SWAT season 8?

It seems there might have been a change, as what was earlier stated was that SWAT’s seventh season would mark the end of the series.
Originally, the series was supposed to end after season 6 in 2023, but just before that happened, they decided to change their minds and produce a seventh and concluding season instead.
Due to a crusade spearheaded by Moore, joined by the show’s main cast members and enthusiastic fans, the show was rescued yet another time, and it was officially renewed for its eighth season in April 2024.
Moore expressed his delight in a statement after the announcement: “SWAT is back in action! Have faith in miracles! I’m incredibly proud of this show, all the effort that has gone into creating it, and the people involved. I’m deeply appreciative of the global fans who have watched, appreciated, cheered for, and stood by SWAT!
It’s likely that the season will have 22 episodes, and interestingly, CBS hasn’t labeled this as the series’ last season, suggesting there might be more seasons to come, potentially a ninth one.
The fresh update about renewal arrived as they were finishing up season 8, however, according to Andrew Dettmann in an interview with TVLine, there were no alterations made to the show’s original blueprint.
He explained: “No, we decided to take this path regardless, as wrapping up the final episode on a high note, such as ‘Wow, this is an amazing team!,’ seemed fitting for a continuation.
The overall strategy had remained consistent throughout. Receiving the announcement about Season 8 was exciting, but it didn’t significantly alter our final episode.
When could SWAT season 8 be released?

In the United States, SWAT season 8 will premiere on CBS on Friday, 31st January 2025, but as of now, there’s no official airdate for the UK.
In the United Kingdom, shows on Sky Max and NOW typically air several months after the seasons conclude, so viewers might not get new episodes until sometime during the summer or fall.
We’ll make sure to provide the latest information about the UK air dates for season 8 as soon as we receive definite updates.
Who will be back to star in SWAT season 8?

Several key cast members from SWAT are set to reprise their roles for season 8. This includes Shemar Moore portraying Sergeant Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson Jr, David Lim playing Officer Victor Tan, Patrick St Esprit as Commander Robert Hicks, and Anna Enger Ritch as Officer Zoe Powell.
Jay Harrington is set to reprise his role as Sergeant David ‘Deacon’ Kay, following an unexpected choice to continue after the season 8 finale. Initially, it seemed he would retire, but in a chat with TVLine, the showrunner, Andrew Dettman, revealed that this was actually part of the plan to have him change his mind.
He clarified that it was certain Deacon would remain present throughout, while we were confident Jay would stick around too. Admittedly, I had some doubts about the plotline involving his retirement and return.
Initially, I was a bit concerned about the reaction after Street and Luca departed, fearing that feigning their absence for Deacon might alienate fans. However, I’m optimistic it didn’t have that effect, and I believe it didn’t. So, yes, Deacon is back and will be part of our team moving forward.
According to what Dettman mentions, several main characters will not be reprising their roles next season. The most notable among them are Alex Russell, portraying Officer Jim Street, and Kenny Johnson, playing Officer Dominique Luca.
In an interview with Deadline, Moore expressed thoughts on these exits and the possibility of their return, stating: “It’s tough to part ways with such talented individuals. We said goodbye to Alex Russell, Kenny Johnson, and a few seasons ago, Lina Esco.
Transitioning is tough, but now we’ve got some Original Gangsters – me as Hondo, Deacon [Jay Harrington], Hicks [Patrick St. Esprit], Tan [David Lim] and a few newcomers. As for the people you might be concerned about, rest assured, they haven’t met their end. In Tinseltown, the unexpected is always possible!
In the meantime, main cast member Rochelle Aytes, who portrays Nichelle Carmichael, will not return for the regular season but is anticipated to make appearances as a guest star instead.
Instead, the absent characters will now feature actress Annie Ilonzeh as Devin Gamble, and Niko Pepaj has been promoted to series regular in his role as Officer Miguel Alfaro.
