As a seasoned crime analyst with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for these characters who seem to be stuck in a never-ending cycle of violence and deception.
***Warning: Sweetpea spoilers ahead***
Rhiannon Lewis is no longer referred to as Sweetpea. Pushed beyond her limits, the previously shy and reserved individual has transformed into a tempest of blood-stirring rage.
Throughout a series of six episodes, Rhiannon (portrayed by Ella Purnell), has committed the murders of two men, unintentionally led to the demise of coworker Jeff (Dustin Demri-Burns), and abducted high-school tormentor Julia Blenkinsopp (Nicole Lecky). Instead of setting her free, Rhiannon keeps Julia confined in her late father’s basement.
Currently excelling in her role as a junior reporter, Rhiannon finds herself in an interesting situation with two men showing interest in her. Her colleague AJ, who exudes the charm of a Golden Retriever, is smitten by her, while Craig, her long-time crush and current romantic partner, considers her his girlfriend.
Eventually, it’s becoming clear to many that she is under scrutiny, as junior detective Marina (played by Leah Harvey) has caught onto her illicit activities, despite her colleagues choosing to overlook it and pursue other leads instead.
Well, it’s great news that Rhiannon’s hair, which used to be quite delicate due to its roots being pulled out, now looks fantastic. She must have found a wonderful wig or her natural hair has grown back strong and healthy!
As the curtain falls on this captivating spectacle, with Marina hot on the heels, I can’t help but wonder: will it be Rhiannon who stands victorious in the end? The law of gravity may dictate that what goes up must come down, but the suspense in this tale is anything but predictable.
Can Rhiannon get away with murder? Here’s how the finale plays out.
Sweetpea ending explained
What happened to Julia?
Initially perceived as the greatest adversary due to years of cruel bullying, Julia Blenkinsopp has remarkably transformed into what could be considered Rhiannon’s latest cherished friend.
Turns out all it takes was her being kidnapped to find a common ground, with Rhiannon discovering that Julia’s “perfect” boyfriend Marcus was controlling, manipulative and abusive.
Instead of going ahead with killing Julia, Rhiannon now intends to release her freely. Julia, for her part, consents to feign being confined within a house during renovations all along.
In an unexpected turn of events, the situation doesn’t unfold as anticipated. Upon trying to help her, Marcus’s aggressive behavior takes control, pushing Julia harshly against a wall, leaving Rhiannon with no choice but to intervene.
In response to Julia ending their relationship, Marcus contemplates suicide by leaping from a balcony – and since Rhiannon suspected Julia might try to save him, she intervenes by pushing him off the balcony instead. Unfortunately, he collides with a stack of marbles below, injuring his head.
As a movie buff, when the pair found themselves in the precinct for interrogation, they implicated Marcus as the mastermind behind Julia’s abduction and both of Rhiannon’s murders, justifying it as self-defense. This narrative was convincing to most, save for Marina, who remained unconvinced.
Instead of partying all night to celebrate their newfound freedom and budding friendship at a club, they spent the following day with Rhiannon granting an interview to the Gazette about her safe homecoming. As this occurred, Julia started to ponder whether she was simply exchanging one harmful relationship for another.
Instead of sticking with the same old routine, she decides to make a change by purchasing airline tickets using Rhiannon’s credit card, disappearing without a trace, and leaving for someplace new, giving the impression that she has started anew.
What happened to Marina?

Despite the entire police force apparently believing Rhiannon’s deceit, Marina remains unconvinced and cannot shake off the suspicion that she might be a murderer.
Eager to uncover the truth, Marina interrogates Rhiannon relentlessly, causing her superior officer, Detective Inspector Diana, to eject her from the interview and dispatch her home.
However, she persists and decides to visit Rhiannon that evening to challenge her. Since Rhiannon isn’t present, Marina forces her way into the house in search of proof that links her to the other two homicides.
After discovering the security camera recordings that confirm Marina abducted Julia, she chooses to stay vigilant throughout the night, hoping for a chance to converse with her directly.
Shocks Rhiannon upon her return home from the club, Marina informs her that she’s ready to bide her time until Rhiannon kills again, as she believes Rhiannon can’t help but do it.
What happens to Craig?

Initially known for his callous attitude towards relationships, characterized by building up and then abandoning partners, builder Craig has transformed into a tender-hearted individual where Rhiannon is concerned, going as far as picking her up from jail.
Spending an evening together at the club, it appears he’s head over heels. However, unluckily for him, Rhiannon has grown fond of AJ and chooses to end things with him.
On her way to work, she aims to end their romantic relationship, suggesting instead that they focus on being friends.
His bewilderment swiftly transforms into rage, given the fact that she requested him to mislead the authorities regarding her location during the investigation of Julia’s disappearance. However, he sets a single condition for maintaining silence.
Following several weeks of presenting his business proposal in the hope of convincing her, Craig proposes that he’d safeguard her confidential information if she consents to transfer ownership of her father’s business to him. In fact, he is prepared with a signed contract ready for her to review.
Backed into a corner and trying not to kill him, she reluctantly signs.
What happens to Rhiannon?

Feeling that her criminal past is now buried and ready for a fresh start, Rhiannon believes herself to be off the hook – Julia isn’t relinquishing her property, her employment is stable, her alibis have been verified, and it’s high time for new beginnings.
That night, AJ stops by, overjoyed upon learning that she’s separated from Craig. Eventually, they end up spending the night together for the first time.
The following day, while still entwined in affection, AJ finds photographs of incriminating evidence sent from an anonymous police contact, among which is the murder weapon – the knife.
Swiftly identifying the knife as the one Rhiannon usually employs for opening office mail, he requests her to display it for him.
Rhiannon argues with him once he’s discovered the truth, leading to a disagreement. Eventually, she confesses, explaining that she was dealing with the grief of losing her father and asserting herself in response.

As Rhiannon tries to rationalise her actions, AJ doesn’t want to hear it, and tries to leave.
Frightened that AJ might leave, Rhiannon grabs a knife and wounds him in the side. Overwhelmed with emotion, she weeps and clings to him as he loses blood on her kitchen floor.
At that precise instant, her sibling Seren, who resides overseas and seldom visits, stepped into the house, causing the tales of everyone to remain unresolved.
