As a long-time Nintendo fan who’s been through the Wii U and 3DS transitions, this news about the backwards compatibility of Nintendo Switch 2 games feels like a breath of fresh air! It’s not every day that we get to keep our old favorites with us as we upgrade to the new hardware.
According to confirmation from Nintendo, the Nintendo Switch 2 will support playing your existing Switch games on the latest hardware, essentially making it capable of running older titles.
This is the first major piece of Switch 2 news we’ve heard in quite a while.
In May 2024, Nintendo’s President, Shuntaro Furukawa, hinted at a complete unveiling of new information, with this scheduled to occur during the ongoing fiscal year, which concludes in April 2025.
It’s been a bit quiet since, making this sudden update something of a pleasant surprise!
Once more, information emerged via X (previously recognized as Twitter), where Furukawa opted for a direct approach to engage with fans.
He began by introducing himself as Furukawa. During the Corporate Management Policy Briefing, he revealed that the Nintendo Switch software would also be compatible with the upcoming Nintendo Switch successor.

Many enthusiasts will undoubtedly rejoice at this news, as the vast collection of fantastic Nintendo Switch games is something we wouldn’t want to forsake.
As a fan, I’m thrilled about backwards compatibility! It means I can carry my favorite classic games along with me without needing to update them. What a delightful perk!
It’s not automatic that new gaming consoles will allow you to carry over your previous games. As a case in point, when Nintendo released the Wii U and 3DS, users could not migrate their earlier games to the Switch at all.
It’s intriguing to consider if the potential Switch 2 model maintains all of the unique configurations, such as detachable Joy-Cons, handheld, tabletop, and TV dock modes.
The existence of backwards compatibility certainly suggests that the new console will be similar in shape to the Switch (as opposed to being a drastically different concept), but only time will tell!
As of now, Nintendo has yet to reveal the name of their upcoming console, leaving many details unclear. The enigmatic nature of this gaming giant continues.
In the same update, Furukawa mentioned that “Nintendo Switch Online service will carry over to the next version of Nintendo Switch too.
For those who are Nintendo Switch Online members and appreciate playing their collection of vintage games, this announcement should bring great joy too!
At the end of his statement, Furukawa mentioned that more details about the next version of Nintendo Switch, such as whether it’s compatible with the current one, would be disclosed at a future time.
