Switch 2 Goes for the Kill in Japan By Massively Undercutting PS5’s Price

Globally, the Switch 2 is competitively priced next to the PS5, yet Nintendo understands its primary market.

The creator of Mario has proposed an intriguing strategy to address the declining value of the yen and concerns about exports – a Japanese language-exclusive system that will cost approximately ¥49,980, which is equivalent to around $338 USD.

As a gamer, I can tell you that this system is a steal! It’s way cheaper than the $450 it will cost in the US. In fact, it’s almost half the price of the PS5, which goes for around ¥79,980 (~$542). That’s one heck of a bargain!

It’s worth noting that Nintendo plans to offer a multilingual version of the Switch 2 in Japan for ¥69,980 (approximately $474). However, it appears they anticipate that many local consumers will opt for the less expensive alternative instead.

This approach is intended to theoretically stop the gadget from being shipped out of the country. Additionally, it’s expected to safeguard against foreign buyers exploiting Japan’s weak economy.

But for Sony, this may be the final nail in its domestic coffin.

The PS5 has performed well in its domestic market, yet consistently trails behind the Nintendo Switch in sales. Additionally, its rising costs are slowing its progress. To anticipate any outcome other than a significant defeat would require a very positive perspective.

Sony might not pay much heed, given its current focus on expanding its global influence rather than solely on the Japanese market, despite its significant importance.

I guess they’ve given Nintendo an edge in this situation, leaving only the leftover pieces of the market for them to grab. As a gamer, it feels like we might be witnessing a strategic move on their part.
