Gun Gale Online Season 2 brought a nostalgic tear to my eye as I watched the early beta test version of Kirito in action. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen him outside the confines of Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night, and it felt like a breath of fresh air.
Gun Gale Online Season 2. The last glimpse audiences had of Kirito in action within Sword Art Online was during the movie, Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night. This film presented a narrative from the early arcs of Sword Art Online before Kirito and Asuna managed to break free from the virtual reality game. It’s been an extended period since we last saw Kirito in a TV series adaptation.
Gun Gale Online” Season 2. As Pitohui recalls the two players who left a lasting impression on her within a virtual reality game, she mentions Kirito first because he made a significant impact during the beta phase of “Sword Art Online,” making him one of the earliest versions of the character we’ve seen so far.

How Does Kirito Return in Sword Art Online?
In Episode 8 of Gun Gale Online II, Pitohui gears up for another battle against LLENN, and she’s questioned about any fear she might have towards her opponent. It’s then that Pitohui discloses that only two players in her virtual reality gaming past have managed to captivate her with their power and determination. LLENN is one of these exceptional individuals, but the first person who truly impressed Pitohui encountered her during the beta testing phase of Sword Art Online. This means that Pitohui had already interacted with Kirito prior to the events depicted in the original Sword Art Online anime.
Via her recollections, we witness the Kirito character as he was during the beta test. She shares that they engaged in one-on-one combat, where she describes him as a “fit, arrogant man,” and notes that he cut their fight short. Surprised by his skill despite being two levels below her, he allowed her to claim the boss. Expressing eagerness for another encounter should they ever reach the same level, Pitohui admired him immensely and even felt embarrassed about her own perceived weakness in comparison. Essentially, we’re given a glimpse of Kirito from someone else’s perspective without his input shaping that perception. And yet, he remains the strongest!
What’s Next for Kirito in Sword Art Online?
From my gaming perspective, ever since Kirito’s adventures in the Alicization Arc concluded in 2020, the Sword Art Online TV anime has been on a pause. But fear not, as Reki Kawahara continues to pen the original light novels, there’s still hope for the series to continue someday. What we do know is that an original anime feature film is being developed at this moment.
Earlier this year, the team behind Sword Art Online revealed that they’re working on a brand-new film in the series. They emphasized that this movie won’t be based on any of the previous light novels, manga, or animated adaptations. Unfortunately, there haven’t been many updates about its progress yet, so we might have to wait a bit longer to see Kirito back on our screens again.
