Taika Waititi’s Answer About His Star Wars Movie Has Us More Confused Than Ever

As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of film appreciation under my belt, I must admit that Taika Waititi’s cryptic comments about his Star Wars project have left me both intrigued and slightly bewildered. With such an impressive track record of bringing fresh perspectives to established franchises like Marvel’s Thor and Disney+’s The Mandalorian, the prospect of a Waititi-directed Star Wars film is nothing short of exhilarating.

Filmmaker Taika Waititi rekindled interest in Chris Hemsworth’s character Thor with the 2017 release of “Thor: Ragnarok”, leading Lucasfilm to announce in 2020 that Waititi would be developing a movie for the Star Wars universe. However, after more than four years, there have been no further developments on this project. In a recent interview, Waititi discussed the status of the project but didn’t provide any clear indication as to whether it will ever become reality. In essence, Waititi suggested that while the project might not be “cancelled”, it has experienced significant delays and may only move forward if suitable opportunities arise in the future.

In a conversation with The Playlist, Waititi humorously reflected on the status of his Star Wars project, saying, “What was once alive, what is death? Well, death is simply a fresh start. More chances to expand and thrive.” He jokingly added, “I’ve learned that everything is always in development. For any filmmaker, my advice would be, ‘Say yes to everything.’ You see, things change and vanish, only to reappear again. I’ve had projects disappear for years, then resurface, leaving me to wonder, ‘Did I really think that was dead? Now I have to dive back into it again.

It appears that Waititi was given the chance to create a Star Wars film, which he accepted. However, this particular project has taken a backseat or lower priority for both him and Lucasfilm. Since the initial announcement, Waititi has been busy working on movies like Thor: Love and Thunder and Next Goal Wins, as well as TV series such as Our Flag Means Death and Time Bandits. Despite this, he has remained connected to Star Wars in another role, providing the voice for the droid IG-11 in The Mandalorian on Disney+.

Contrarily, Lucasfilm hasn’t been as frequent in producing big-screen movies. The latest Star Wars film released was “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019. However, since 2017, the studio has been announcing new films that have sparked fan anticipation, but these announced projects have either been postponed indefinitely or cancelled altogether. The announcement of Rian Johnson developing a trilogy of new films marked the start of this trend, with both parties citing scheduling issues as the reason for delay. Yet, Johnson is far from being the only one affected by such delays.

As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the upcoming Star Wars projects that are yet to reveal significant production developments. These include the films by directors like Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Shawn Levy, Donald and Stephen Glover, Patty Jenkins, and Dave Filoni. Additionally, Simon Kinberg is rumored to be working on a series of three films, while Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian & Grogu” movie has already commenced production this year.

Since certain Star Wars filmmakers have openly confirmed their projects being scrapped, Waititi’s lack of explicit statement about the project’s demise could potentially spark hope among fans.
