As a long-time gamer and fan of both fantasy and time travel stories, I was genuinely excited for Apple TV+’s reimagining of “Time Bandits.” The initial reviews were promising, and the prospect of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement collaborating on this project was tantalizing. Alas, it seems that even with such a talented team behind it, the show has been canceled after just one season.

The latest fantasy series by Taika Waititi, titled “Time Bandits,” has been terminated after just one season, as reported by THR. This show made its debut on Apple TV+ in July of this year. Regrettably, the possibility of a second season for Lisa Kudrow and her vibrant cast is no longer in the cards. For those with longer memories, Terry Gilliam’s film from 1981 may ring a bell. The present landscape of television and films has seen many studios and companies attempting to find success with projects from their archives. In this case, Waititi chose to revisit the time travel narrative for “Time Bandits” on Apple TV+. Initial responses and reviews from critics were generally favorable. However, it seems that Apple TV+’s decision to cancel the series was influenced by its viewership figures, as “Time Bandits” never managed to break into the Nielsen Top 10.

Over the past few years, Apple TV+ has gained a reputation as a go-to platform for high-quality TV dramas that might not have been approved by other competitors. Shows such as Severence, Silo, Slow Horses, and others have thrived under this umbrella. However, with the high-caliber talent and production costs associated with these shows comes the risk of them not making it for multiple seasons. Creating TV of this caliber doesn’t come cheap, and the fate of Time Bandits serves as a stark reminder of this fact. In 2024, many movie studios and entertainment companies have announced budget cuts across the board. Previously this year, ComicBook talked with Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement during the online event for the release of Time Bandits. In late July, two episodes premiered on Apple TV+ to start things off. Naturally, we wanted to know if a second season was in development for this story after the hints in the premise. At that time, the team shared they had been brainstorming ideas. Unlike some other streaming series, the team revealed that scripts were already being drafted. If another platform decides to revive the show with a potential second season, having the script for a new season might attract a competitor to take over. Back then, Clement mentioned, “We are currently writing a second season, but whether it sees the light of day depends on whether people watch the first season. If nobody watches it, we’ll toss it in the trash.

He stated, “However, I’m unable to share because I don’t wish to ruin the upcoming season.” Regrettably, we may never uncover what they were planning for the next episode. In 2024, no show or franchise is permanently sealed off. But, given the increasing trend of streaming services favoring well-known IP, will there be a savior for Time Bandits? It’s challenging to predict, as the key factor with many of these programs is their unpredictable nature. Currently, Wynona Earp is enjoying a new content release this month and there are numerous efforts by fans to revive other shows that have been canceled.
