According to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, while the video game industry might be one of the first or even most advanced sectors to employ AI, he considers the idea of using AI in this context an “oxymoron”. Despite some debate about its application, AI is currently being utilized to improve game development. However, Zelnick emphasizes that strong safeguards are already established to shield valuable intellectual property like Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto series from any potential risks associated with AI.
According to GamesIndustry.biz, during a recent investor call, Zelnick was questioned about his view on artificial intelligence: “Machine learning, machines don’t truly learn… [These] are just handy ways to make complex processes appear magical to humans. The key point is that these are digital tools and we’ve been using them for a long time. I believe that the AI technology currently available will enhance our efficiency and enable us to produce higher-quality work, but it won’t lead to job losses.
Given the anticipated blockbuster success of GTA 6, it’s clear that Take-Two Interactive would not hesitate to enforce strict penalties against anyone who violates their intellectual property rights. Speaking about unauthorized AI training on proprietary IP, Zelnick stated, “We won’t do it because we need to protect our own IP. We are careful to select technology that respects others’ intellectual property and helps us maintain ours. As for additional safeguards, I can’t think of any necessary at the moment.
