As a long-time gamer and horror movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and disappointment regarding the news that “Tarot,” the recently released horror film starring Jacob Batalon, will be coming to Netflix in August. I was looking forward to catching this movie on the big screen after being intrigued by its premise – college friends who die in ways related to their horoscopes – and the fact that it had a decent box office performance despite lackluster reviews.
Approximately two months after its theatrical release, Sony Pictures Entertainment has revealed that “Tarot,” a horror film featuring Jacob Batalon from “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” will be streaming on Netflix starting in August. This chilling production, penned by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg for the screen, is an adaptation of Nicholas Adams’ 1992 novel of the same title. Based on the book’s summary, the plot revolves around a band of college friends who mysteriously start dying after having their horoscopes read. In order to unravel the enigma before it’s too late, they must collaborate and pool their resources.
The film brought in a decent amount at the box office, raking in $49 million while having a production budget of only $8 million. However, this revenue didn’t meet Sony’s expectations, as the movie seemed reminiscent of big-budget productions like “Final Destination,” with Tarot readings replacing the singular psychic vision. Despite receiving poor critical reception and being released in a disappointing box office year, earning nearly $50 million is not insignificant.
As a film enthusiast who has been following the industry for years, I’ve seen my fair share of productions and their marketing strategies. The recent news about “Tarot” and its cast, including Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, and Avantika, piqued my interest. Initially titled “Horrorscope,” this movie was set for a June release, but the sudden change in title and release date before the marketing campaign began left me intrigued.
I had the chance to film an alternate ending, and trust me, it was hilarious. Yet, upon reflection, I believe the version that made it into the final cut was just right.
In the world of Tarot, if a close-knit circle of individuals disregard the fundamental law – not to use another person’s Tarot deck – without realizing it, they unwittingly awaken an indescribable evil hidden within those enchanted cards. Subsequently, each friend encounters their predetermined fate and finds themselves engaged in a desperate struggle against time to elude the ominous future foretold through their readings.
Scott Glassgold of Ground Control, in collaboration with Alloy Entertainment and its executives Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton, produced the project. Halberg and Cohen also took on executive producer roles, with Screen Gems joining them in this capacity.
