Last week, authorities apprehended a 19-year-old individual on suspicions of plotting potential attacks at various large-scale events. This includes Taylor Swift’s three-night Eras Tour residency. Subsequently, the suspect admitted to further details concerning their plan. Additionally, investigations have led to the uncovering of additional information regarding other suspected individuals involved in these potentially dangerous schemes.
At a news conference held on August 8th, authorities disclosed that the key suspect admitted his intention was to carry out a suicide attack along with causing harm to a substantial group of individuals using knives and explosive devices.
The leader of Austria’s State Security and Intelligence Directorate, Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, disclosed at a gathering (as reported by NBC News), that the individual under investigation, who is an Austrian native with ancestry from North Macedonia, had acquired instructions for making explosives.
In the main suspect’s apartment, authorities found equipment for making bombs, such as hydrogen peroxide, homemade explosives, detonators, and detonator cables. Moreover, Haijawi-Pirchner mentioned that the explosives had previously been constructed.
And they’ve expressed relief that they were able to stop the attack.
As a passionate follower, I can’t help but share the relief that swept over me when Austria’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stated during a press briefing, as reported by NBC News, that a crisis was averted. Haijawi-Pirchner revealed more information about the second arrested individual on August 7, who is a 17-year-old Austrian national with ancestry from Turkey and Croatia. The directorate mentioned that this second suspect worked for a company potentially involved in providing services during Swift’s concerts in Vienna; however, the nature of their specific role was not specified.
At the residence of the second suspect, Haijawi-Pirchner stated that authorities discovered materials linked to the extremist groups ISIS and Al-Qaeda. Additionally, there were screenshots of homemade labs and videos saved on various devices.
Haijawi-Pirchner mentioned that they’re questioning a third suspect, a 15-year-old Austrian with Turkish ancestry, in relation to this particular terrorist incident. However, no other individuals are being pursued at the moment regarding this specific plot. He also stated that there could be others who were aware of the plan, and those individuals are currently under investigation.
After the cancellations of Swift’s shows on August 8th, 9th, and 10th at Ernst Happel Stadium, the London Metropolitan Police confirmed to the Associated Press that there is no known connection between the Austrian terror plot and the upcoming concerts at Wembley Stadium, scheduled to start on August 15th.
Throughout her 18-year career, this Grammy winner has rarely canceled performances except for extraordinary situations. These instances include the cancellation of her Lover Fest concerts due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and a concert in Thailand in 2014, which was called off because the country was imposing strict curfews by military force during anti-government protests.
