Teamfight Tactics Devs Recommend Their Favorite Traits from Set 12

As a long-time League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics player, I am beyond excited for the upcoming Set 12, “Magic n’ Mayhem.” The trailers and sneak peeks Riot Games have shared so far have me buzzing with anticipation. I can’t wait to dive back into TFT and explore this new set filled with elemental effects, dragons, bakers, and bees!

Beginning July 31st, the “Teamfight Tactics” spin-off of “League of Legends” introduces Set 12, titled “Magic n’ Mayhem.” This set is filled with exciting elemental effects, dragons, bakers, and bees. Riot Games recently provided a sneak peek into the various traits featured in Set 12, as well as new and recurring units and the Charms that players can purchase to enhance their desired team compositions.

On July 16th, players can try out Set 12 of Teamfight Tactics in the Public Beta Environment (PBE). The developers shared with ComicBook their preferred Magic and Mayhem units and traits from this upcoming set before its official launch. It’s no surprise that some of their favorites align with those already gaining popularity based on initial reactions from players.

Peter Whalen, the head of Teamfight Tactics’ game direction at Riot Games, expressed his preference for the Sugarcraft trait. In Magic n’ Mayhem, Sugarcraft comprises champions such as Soraka, Rumble, Bard, Jinx, and Gwen. The primary goal is to construct items and activate the trait as early as possible for optimal benefits. With each player combat round, Sugarcraft champions stack up layers on their “cakes,” which escalate in damage once the cake reaches its seventh layer. These layers are enhanced with gold and additional surprises.

“Whalen expressed a preference for aspects that allow for the creation of impressive structures gradually. In his view, sugarcraft embodies this enjoyable and imaginative side of baking for him.”

As a big fan of League of Legends and its champions, I myself can’t help but be drawn to two five-cost units: Smolder the Dragon/Blaster and Morgana the Bat Queen/Preserver. Although not bound by the Sugarcraft trait, these champions resonate with me in unique ways.

Dan Townsend, producer for Teamfight Tactics at Riot Games, proposed two additional traits: Eldritch and Hextech. The Eldritch trait includes champions such as Ashe, Elise, Nilah, Syndra, Mordekaiser, Nami, and Briar. Once a certain health threshold is reached, Eldritch abilities are triggered, summoning an assistant creature to aid you. Gathering three Eldritch champions rewards the “Tainted Golem,” resembling a corrupted version of Ivern’s companion Daisy; five Eldritch champions grant the “Dark Monolith,” similar to Malphite; seven Eldritch champions summon “The Many-Eyed Beast”; and accumulating ten Eldritch champions results in the powerful “Stormbringer,” akin to Volibear’s appearance on the Howling Abyss during his rework.

Townsend identified as a dedicated Eldritch player. His ultimate goal was to capture the elusive Prismatic Volibear. Since he spent a significant amount of time on ARAM (All Random All Mid), it was thrilling for him to utilize that 2020 event acquisition.

Instead of focusing solely on reaching Eldritch’s 10-unit threshold for obtaining Stormbringer, Townsend shared his preference for utilizing Honeymancy trait as well. The champions belonging to this category include Blitzcrank, Ziggs, Kog’Maw, Nunu & Willump, and Veigar. These champions are accompanied by swarms of bees that amplify damage dealt and taken. When a Honeymancer is defeated in combat, the bees transfer their allegiance to another surviving Honeymancer for the remainder of the battle. The leading Honeymancer, Veigar, boasts an ability named “King Bee’s Judgement,” which bestows additional ability power based on Charm purchases. This trait, according to Townsend, offers intriguing possibilities when interacting with newly acquired Charms.

Before the complete reveal of Honeymancy, there was debate among people about whether it would turn out to be a meme or something more substantial. According to Townsend, while it may have certain meme-like traits, there is also depth and complexity beyond those qualities.

He acknowledged, “It holds a touch of the meme-like quality.” He favors this composition because it borders on the absurd in the Magic n’ Mayhem universe. We’re thrilled to be exploring new tonal territories with it, similar to Honeymancer and Sugarcraft. These creations aim to contrast the darker elements, like Witchcraft or Eldritch, and instead focus on the lighter side. Additionally, there are compositions that fall in between, such as Frost and Pyro.

Beginning on July 16th, you can test out Teamfight Tactics Set 12 in the Public Beta Environment (PBE) prior to its official launch on July 31st.
