Reddit user OceanDepth95028 has reimagined and renamed the device as the “NokiApple LumiPhone 1020 SE.” The phone is so impressive that even one of the moderators from the hackintosh subreddit, who usually focuses on non-hackintosh devices, left it up. 9to5Mac was the first to break the news about this fascinating new gadget.
The NokiApple LumiPhone 1020 SE isn’t really a Windows Phone disguised as an iOS device. Let me clarify that for you. Instead, it’s essentially the core components of an iPhone SE (Gen 3) housed within the shell of a Lumia 1020. However, OceanDepth95028 didn’t just put a new phone in an old casing. This project was about getting the internal parts of an iPhone to function with a fingerprint reader mounted on the backside, creating a custom SIM card slot, and making a Lightning port appear like a micro-USB one.
In spite of it being a merged project due to unauthorized access, this combined gadget surprisingly works. It’s capable of handling 5G connectivity, and it boasts an operational fingerprint scanner situated at its rear end.
As a tech enthusiast, I’ve recently gotten my hands on the iPhone SE powered by the A15 Bionic chip, which is still fresh off the press and can handle all the latest apps. Despite being a unique project, as its maker puts it, the NokiApple LumiPhone 1020 SE could potentially serve as a daily driver. However, there are a couple of features that don’t seem to function optimally – Apple Pay and wireless charging. It’s understandable why Apple Pay doesn’t work on a device like the NokiApple LumiPhone 1020 SE, given the potential for insecurity when building such devices using similar methods.
To adapt the iPhone SE components into the Lumia 1020 casing, certain buttons needed to be repositioned, including the fingerprint sensor being situated on the phone’s backside. Nevertheless, its design was captivating and embodied the essence of the Lumia brand, demonstrating the peak capabilities of Windows Phone. Moreover, its fame can be attributed to a successful advertising campaign by Microsoft that emphasized the 41 MP camera of the phone. Interestingly, it was this ad that ignited my curiosity about Windows Phone, eventually leading me to write for Windows Central.
Although the Lumia 950 XL might have outperformed the Lumia 1020 in certain technical aspects, I believe the Lumia 1020 better embodied the essence of Windows Phone. The Lumia 1020 was launched during the height of Windows Phone’s popularity, boasted an exceptional camera, and enjoyed support from Microsoft’s marketing efforts. Conversely, the Lumia 950 XL seemed like an unplanned release by Panos Panay.
