Rescue crews are hoping for a miracle.
Mike Lynch, a prominent figure in British technology, and his daughter Hannah are reportedly among the six individuals yet to be found, following the sinking of their luxury yacht Bayesian amidst an unexpected storm off the coast of Sicily on August 19th, as per NBC News reports.
10 crew members and 12 passengers were aboard Lynch’s yacht, but 6 people are currently missing, among them is his daughter Hannah, who the BBC believes to be 18 years old.
Salvatore Cuisine from Sicily’s civil defense department informed NBC that an incident occurred overnight in the region, triggered by a waterspout – a tornado over water – which is believed to be the cause of the disaster.
“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said, adding that a nearby yacht wasn’t as badly damaged. Cocina confirmed and that they were able to save 15 survivors from the Bayesian, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares.
15 individuals who were saved were divided into two groups: eight were transported to a nearby hospital, while the remaining seven were relocated to a hotel.
One body believed to belong to the yacht’s cook was found near the wreck, but according to Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the Italian fire rescue service, the remaining six individuals are believed to be inside the hull, which is resting at a depth of 50 meters off Porticello, near Palermo.
As reported by Cocina, the team and travelers come from diverse nations such as Great Britain, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Spain.
As a connoisseur of local living, I’d like to share an intriguing incident that occurred recently in our coastal town. Early one morning, around 4:30 a.m., a fellow resident and skilled fisherman, Francesco Cefalu, reported seeing a flare. Unfortunately, by the time I reached the scene, the super yacht had already vanished beneath the waves. All that remained were floating remnants such as cushions and debris in the water. A sobering reminder of the unpredictable nature of our maritime environment.
He clarified that while no one else was discovered, as reported by NBC, he had notified the coast guard and remained at the location for more than three hours. His assumption was that everyone who went missing might be inside.
According to NBC, one survivor, named Charlotte Emsley, admitted that at one point she lost grip of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia. However, she managed to retrieve the baby and held her above the waves until an inflatable lifeboat was prepared and rescued them both. Fortunately, Sofia’s father, James Emsley, also made it through the ordeal.
Lynch—who has been referred to as Britain’s Bill Gates—was cleared of fraud and conspiracy charges in June related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp, according to the Associated Press.
