Ted Lasso, thought to be deceased, has been brought back to life, an experience Brett Goldstein seems familiar with. The actor recently shared on the NPR podcast Wild Card his strange journey of grieving over his cherished sports comedy series, only to see it reborn a month ago. Apple TV+ confirmed that Jason Sudeikis will once again play the lead character, this time coaching a women’s soccer team in Kansas. Goldstein, along with Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, and Juno Temple, are expected to return as well. Although this news sounds positive, Goldstein acknowledges a certain emotional turmoil that leaves him pondering the analogy of his friend’s deceased pet cat.
As a dedicated fan who’s still reeling from the finale of Ted Lasso in 2023, I can tell you that yes, I went through a grieving process. It was an emotional rollercoaster – strange, even surreal. We all shed tears over it. Now, as I grapple with the show’s renewal, I find myself often reminiscing about a childhood story shared by one of my friends.
Goldstein shared a fascinating tale about an old friend from university. This individual had a cherished cat who tragically got run over and was buried when he was a kid. The friend adored this pet deeply, and the loss hit him hard. He spent countless nights in bed, filled with sorrow and despair, praying fervently for his beloved cat to return. Incredibly, his wish came true! It turned out that the cat they had buried wasn’t theirs after all.
The actor continued, ‘I often ponder this character. I find myself musing, ‘It makes sense he’s not quite right in the head, given he denies death’s existence. So, it’s no surprise he’s peculiar, believing he can resurrect things. To me, it feels like that child who lost something, buried it, mourned, and held a funeral. You’re suggesting we could restore what was lost? That’s beyond comprehension!’ Essentially, I feel as if I am that child.
It seems fitting that Roy Kent, a character Goldstein has a strong connection with, would respond in a typical manner when hearing a friend’s heartbreaking tale, potentially showcasing the resemblance between Goldstein and his cherished character. Interestingly, Goldstein was initially brought on board as a writer for Ted Lasso, and he even tried out for the role of Roy Kent after the series had already been developed. Now, in Season 4, he’s returning to write again, with the writers already gathering to brainstorm fresh storylines.
Production for Season 4 of “Ted Lasso” has begun, boasting a total of 10 upcoming episodes, though specific release dates remain undisclosed as of now. In the meantime, you can catch up on Seasons 1-3, which are currently available for streaming on Apple TV+.
