The hit comedy series Ted Lasso is set to return for its fourth season, causing excitement among fans. However, this announcement also brought mixed feelings for the cast and crew who produce the show. Intriguingly, one of the main characters, writer/actor Brett Goldstein, compared the series’ return to finding a friend’s deceased cat. Initially, you may be puzzled by this comparison, but when you delve deeper into its meaning, it becomes an apt metaphor for the unique dynamics of the show led by Jason Sudeikis.
In a recent conversation with Rachel Martin from NPR, Goldstein likened his emotional rollercoaster during ‘Ted Lasso’ to that of a friend who believed their cat had passed away, but later discovered it was still alive. “It was quite emotional,” he said, adding, “it’s an unusual experience – we all shed tears” before delving into a more detailed account.
There’s a friend from college whose memory often crosses my mind. He had a beloved cat who tragically got run over. They buried the cat in their garden, and the event left a deep impact on him as a child. He lay in bed, heartbroken and shedding tears, praying fervently for his cat to return. Miraculously, the cat did come back, but it turned out that they had mistakenly buried another cat instead. This story has always stayed with me.
Well, you know how it goes when a character denies something fundamental like the reality of death, it’s only natural to question their sanity, right? So, Goldstein playfully jokes, “It’s no surprise he’s got a few screws loose.” He’s an odd duck, this guy, thinking he can revive things from beyond.
Now, when Martin inquired if we, the cast and crew, had resurrected Ted Lasso much like the character does, Goldstein agreed, reminiscing that we had indeed mourned the loss of our show after season three, which was always intended to be its final chapter.
Goldstein clarified his sentiment by stating, “In essence, I’m expressing a sense of nostalgic familiarity, like being that kid again.” He further disclosed that he is presently working in the script-writing team for Season 4 of ‘Lasso’. However, he found this phase quite peculiar, as he confessed. “It feels like we put it to rest…We mourned, we had a farewell ceremony. Are you suggesting we can resurrect anything?” He added, expressing his sense of responsibility and awe towards the creative process, “It’s a heavy burden.

Brett Goldstein Thinks Love Is The Key To Everything — On ‘Ted Lasso’ And In Life
Goldstein, like Bill Lawrence from Ted Lasso, is another creator of the show Shrinking. Contrary to what some people might label as the series being overly sincere, Goldstein doesn’t think there’s such a thing. He believes it’s more about asking the right questions of others. As he put it, “Everyone’s trying and everyone’s sad.” He further explained that if you look at someone deeply enough, you can find love for them.
A lovely thought, indeed, which resonates in his humor and professional decisions so far. After all, empathy seems to be the key to a contented existence, doesn’t it?
