Warning! SPOILERS about Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 18 ahead.
In an unexpected yet anticipated twist, Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 18 marked the conclusion of a tumultuous relationship that had been a central focus for much of the medical drama’s recent seasons. The finale of this season took the theme of surprise further by presenting a major disaster in an unexpected manner, as depicted in the promos, it was expected to involve Amelia and Simone, but instead, it unfolded at an unusual time with other characters finding themselves in peril. The breakup wasn’t entirely out of the blue, but rather something that came about in a way that was unlikely.
In episode 18 of Grey’s Anatomy season 21, two well-known patients from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital faced critical surgeries. Dylan and Nora had been in the hospital for an extended period, leading to familiarity among the doctors. The procedures were risky, with one not even recommended, while the other was a last-ditch effort conceived by Winston and Teddy. Remarkably, both operations ended successfully. The aftermath of Nora’s surgery left lasting implications due to the accomplishments of Winston and Teddy, as they carried out their plan. Furthermore, the unexpected turn of events in Nora’s case led to a revelation about Teddy’s personal life, prompting her to make the decision to leave Owen.
Teddy Finally Leaves Owen After Their Multiple Problems In Grey’s Anatomy Season 21
Saving Nora Showed Teddy To Look For Unlikely But Better Alternatives
It was clear throughout season 21 of Grey’s Anatomy that Teddy and Owen’s relationship was on shaky ground, as their marriage often brought them more pain than joy, and neither seemed keen on putting in the necessary effort. However, Teddy’s budding friendship with Cass Beckman, who admired and appreciated her, made it even clearer how much strain keeping their relationship together was causing Teddy. This led to the idea of opening their marriage, but ultimately showed Teddy that it wasn’t what she truly desired, eventually leading her to confront the fact that their marriage might have been beyond repair.
In the presence of Owen, Nora seemed so comfortable which made Teddy feel pained. However, it was when Teddy successfully rescued Nora that she realized she needed to prioritize herself over Owen. The daring plan Teddy conceived at Link and Jo’s wedding in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 21, episode 17 seemed audacious, groundbreaking, and incredibly risky, but it gave Nora a glimmer of hope. Bringing that idea to fruition not only gave Nora hope but also filled Teddy with hope, proving to her that what once seemed unattainable was now within reach. This realization finally empowered Teddy to put herself first.
Teddy Choosing Herself Proves She’s Not Under Owen’s Spell Anymore
For So Long, Teddy Chose Owen Time & Time Again Without Him Doing The Same
The way Owen didn’t respond to Teddy’s questions about his feelings for Nora influenced Teddy’s decision. Instead of answering directly, Owen proposed cutting Nora from his life, suggesting he was dedicated to their family. However, this evasiveness regarding Teddy’s request for an answer was a clear indication that Owen was prepared to hide his feelings to achieve what he wanted (a stable family life with Teddy).
This situation has followed the pattern set since Teddy was first introduced on Grey’s Anatomy, where Owen consistently prioritized himself over others. He initially brought Teddy to Seattle in an attempt to impress Cristina, who was seeking a mentor, disregarding Teddy’s obvious unrequited feelings for him. Even when Teddy married Henry, Owen criticized her choice, despite having no justification. Interestingly, Owen often sought the possibility of a relationship with Teddy during his own romantic struggles, going as far as to kiss her while still married to Amelia, as she wasn’t spending enough time with his family following Megan’s discovery.
In a turn of events, I found myself conceived when Owen decided to travel to Germany upon Amelia’s suggestion to seek out Teddy if that was his desire, amidst our intense battles. The journey towards Owen and Teddy’s marriage was not without its twists, as Owen often opted for others over Teddy, leaving Teddy seemingly content with Koracick. Despite their tumultuous past, I consistently chose Owen, even allowing him to portray me as the antagonist in the eyes of our peers following my indiscretion with Koracick. However, saving Nora allowed me to recognize that by choosing Owen, I had neglected myself and my own desires.
What Teddy Leaving Owen Means For Grey’s Anatomy Season 22
Teddy Can Finally Be Her Happiest & Best Self On Her Own
In the 21st season of Grey’s Anatomy, the ongoing relationship issues between characters Teddy and Owen became a central focus, culminating in Teddy choosing to leave Owen. This shift in their dynamic could potentially add freshness to their storylines since previous seasons (19, 20, and 21) primarily delved into their family life and marital struggles. By separating Teddy and Owen, the narrative could expand beyond their relationship, enriching the broader Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital storyline as well.
In the finale of Grey’s Anatomy season 21, Teddy deciding to prioritize herself doesn’t guarantee a permanent separation from Owen. Instead, it frees her from Owen’s influence, but it doesn’t erase their feelings for each other. If they decide to rekindle their relationship in the future, they could do so on more equal terms, minimizing the impact of their past issues on their new romance.
