As a longtime fan of the Teen Titans, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia as I delve into the latest installment, Teen Titans: Starfire. Formica’s heartwarming portrayal of Starfire and Cyborg’s blossoming friendship resonates with me deeply, reminding me of my own experiences forming bonds with those who, much like the introverted Cyborg, may not open up easily.
The acclaimed Teen Titans graphic novel series from DC has unveiled its newest installment, titled “Teen Titans: Starfire.” In this captivating continuation, writers Kami Garcia and artists Gabriel Picolo shine a spotlight on the iconic Titan, Starfire. This chapter unfolds after Dick Grayson joins the team in “Teen Titans: Robin,” and it introduces not only Starfire but also her sister, Kira, as well as Cyborg to the storyline. Readers will have a unique opportunity to discover Starfire like never before, making this an ideal starting point for newcomers or a thrilling addition to the established Teen Titans narrative. Garcia recently shared exclusive insights with ComicBook about crafting this fresh take on Starfire, the long-anticipated union of the Titans, and other exciting aspects of the story.
Meeting Starfire in a New Way
Just as Garcia and Picolo have done in their previous works, the beloved Titans characters have undergone a contemporary makeover while preserving the essence of each character with some modern-day twists. This approach is also reflected in Starfire. As Garcia explains, “We wanted to ensure consistency within the series, so we aimed to make her very relatable. At the same time, we wanted to portray all characters as typical teenagers. So you wouldn’t immediately recognize them as the Teen Titans we’re familiar with.” In this new version, Starfire has a more natural complexion and initially doesn’t realize she possesses powers. The story unfolds as she discovers her abilities and learns to control them.
Garcia stated that our intention is for each book to offer a comprehensive understanding of its character, allowing readers to grasp all essential details without having to search through multiple comics. Ideally, this approach encourages readers to delve deeper into the character’s history and other related content.
Regarding Starfire’s abilities, fans can embark on an exhilarating journey as they discover her fresh powers simultaneously, and her distinct talent pool has added a twist to the team dynamics, offering intriguing twists for both action sequences and narrative possibilities.

Garcia emphasized on her power surges and energy outbursts, as well as her unique talent for comprehending several languages. He finds it intriguing to explore this with a teenager since it appears sudden to her, like learning a new language overnight. For instance, she might only speak English one moment, then understand conversations happening in different languages the next. This aspect is particularly engaging, considering Garcia’s own struggle with foreign languages, making it exciting to suddenly comprehend everyone around him.
In the book, there’s a significant aspect that resonates with Garcia personally, and it gives the team a chance to offer more relatable experiences for readers. This element is that the character in question is portrayed as having an invisible disability – Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a condition Garcia herself has. While this isn’t part of her powers, Garcia found it entertaining to incorporate it because she wants all readers, particularly teenagers, to feel represented and find someone they can relate to. There are many individuals in the U.S., dealing with various invisible disabilities such as POTS, Crohn’s, EDS, and PCOS, who often aren’t discussed openly. By creating a character experiencing this, Garcia aims to demonstrate that having a disability doesn’t prevent you from being a hero.
From the onset, ensuring every fan feels recognized has been a key aspect of our series. This objective led to a shift in color scheme following the second graphic novel. As our books feature numerous biracial and multiracial characters, we chose to expand the color palette significantly for the second book starring Beast Boy, as it would help avoid assumptions that all characters are white. Characters like Raven and Dick Grayson being the exceptions, we wanted to ensure proper representation for everyone else, dedicating considerable effort towards this end.
Garcia mentioned that one aspect which made Starfire’s character having an invisible disability suitable was the presence of Cyborg in the book, as he is visibly disabled with robotic prosthetics. This setup offered a chance to have a character with visible prosthetics on the page and another character who has an unseen disability but is deeply impacted by it.
A Lovely Friendship
In the series ‘Teen Titans: Starfire’, Victor first appears and it’s not long before a beautiful friendship starts to blossom. Sharing many similarities, Victor and Kori quickly discover common ground, which strengthens their bond as they continue to uncover more about each other.
In this narrative, the characters share many similarities, as both Cyborg and Starfire have strained relationships with their parents. Specifically, Cyborg is distanced from his father, and though Starfire resides with her mother, the mother figure is largely absent due to her preoccupation with a new character and her engagement. In this tale, Starfire attends college, but she continues to live at home during her studies, in contrast to the other characters who are younger. As stated by Garcia.
In essence, Garcia mentioned that these characters share a unique bond, despite not realizing it themselves. They’re both deeply connected to their families, but circumstances keep them apart. One character, similar to Cyborg, is in college and has a friend circle developing. The other character, reminiscent of Starfire, is exceptionally kind and accepting, which allows them to forge a friendship, despite Cyborg’s introverted nature. This friendship blossoms naturally, as if the characters were meant to be friends, disregarding their individual differences such as disability.
A Tale of Two Sisters
In the realm of Kori, her sibling Kira, infamously called Blackfire in the comics, plays another vital role. As the narrative unfolds, both sisters acquire new talents; however, they differ significantly in virtually every other aspect. Their bond is fragile at best, with Kira showing a touch of cruelty. Despite this, there remains a sense of affection between them.
Indeed, that’s correct. In the narrative, it’s significant to note that Kori Anders can easily be called Kori, whereas Blackfire couldn’t. Hence, we changed her name to Kira. This tale is unique as it revolves around brothers initially, Dick and Damian, who eventually join the Titans team. However, this story also focuses on a sibling dynamic, with Kira representing a sister figure. There’s a sense of tension and a complex relationship between these characters. Garcia made this observation.
Despite the apparent bond between sisters Kira and Kori, and Kora’s clear affection for Kira, there is a hint of a ‘mean girl’ side to Kira. As the narrative unfolds, you’ll notice this becoming more evident due to a complicated relationship that Kira is involved in. This strained relationship with her sister progressively worsens. By the time Kira, Kori, and Cyborg join forces with the rest of the Titans, you can see the emergence of fissures that will eventually split the group, according to Garcia.
Titans Together
Since the initial graphic novel’s release, fans have eagerly anticipated seeing the team unite, and Teen Titans: Starfire adds the last essential piece. Garcia has been anticipating this day too, and the series’ forthcoming sixth volume will allow fans to witness the full might of the team.
In simpler terms, Garcia mentioned that their team consisting of Max, Damian, Dick, Raven, and Beast Boy will encounter Starfire and Vic. The cover for issue 6, titled “Teen Titans Together,” has already been unveiled. It’s exciting to see the entire team in action, as Garcia is working on issue 6, while Gabriel is starting to draw it. With issue 5 still being released, we can’t wait to see people’s reactions!
Fans will have to hold their breath for a little longer regarding that team-up, but they can look forward to discovering numerous Easter eggs hidden within Teen Titans: Starfire. These hidden gems are a staple of the series and have become a tradition in its previous installments. Moreover, according to Garcia, “I always enjoy finding Easter eggs for future books because I’m such a fan of the original characters. But also, I want longtime Titans fans who have been following the series for years to find enjoyable elements within these books that they might not notice.” This way, both new and veteran Titans readers can appreciate the series.
Teen Titans: Starfire is now available in bookstores and on Amazon.
