Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Jason Aaron on Returning TMNT To Its Roots for 40th Anniversary

As a gamer with a soft spot for nostalgia and a deep-rooted appreciation for the TMNT franchise, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about the direction Jason Aaron was taking with the IDW Publishing’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, after reading his recent interview with ComicBook, my curiosity has been piqued. The idea of honoring the gritty, adult-oriented feel of the original Mirage Studios comics is an exciting prospect.

Notable author Jason Aaron has taken over writing duties for IDW Publishing’s beloved series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The publisher anticipates a fresh start with this esteemed creator who is one of the most prominent to write these characters in recent history. Aaron’s innovative strategy involves separating the four turtles and guiding them on individual paths, hinting at looming villainous forces that will bring them back together prematurely. In an interview with ComicBook, Aaron shared his methodology, which aims to honor the spirit of the original Mirage Studios comics from the 1980s.

The books authored by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, contrary to popular belief about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles who gained worldwide fame from a children’s television series, were considerably darker and more mature. What stands out, however, is their meticulous planning of the Turtles’ characters, ensuring each one was distinct enough to transition seamlessly into various media formats.

“Aaron shared that he’s trying to evoke the spirit of the initial Mirage Studios series by Eastman and Laird in this new book. As it’s the 40th anniversary of that original series, he wanted to create a fresh start and a jumping-off point that mirrors the raw, gritty feel and tone of the early days. The story primarily focuses on the four Turtle brothers, depicting them at a significant stage in their lives where they’re still teenagers but have experienced much more than typical teens. They are older now, having lived through many events in their teenage years. Although they aren’t precisely 19 or 15, in his mind, the characters are at that late-teen age where they’ve established their personalities yet are also growing apart and learning to find their way back to unity as a force for good.”

As a gamer, I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for our four characters, scattered across the globe. Aaron shared his vision with us: he aims to strike a delicate balance between making these characters feel familiar and comfortable, yet placing them in uncharted territories where their actions surprise even the most ardent fans. It’s an exciting prospect, not knowing what to expect!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arrives in comic shops monthly from IDW.
