As a lifelong gamer and comic book enthusiast, I’ve seen my fair share of crossovers that leave me scratching my head. However, the latest one, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto, has left me anything but confused!
In their colorful comic book past, the Turtles (Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello, and Michaelangelo) have ventured into some unusual universes. They’ve encountered Batman, He-Man, the Power Rangers, Ghostbusters, and even the kids from Stranger Things. But the upcoming crossover that fans have been eagerly awaiting – TMNT x Naruto – is one of their wildest yet! Thanks to IDW Entertainment, we got an early look at the first issue. And let me tell you, the encounter between the turtles and Naruto’s village isn’t what anyone would predict.
In our initial fusion of these two iconic stories, we kick off with April O’Neil joining forces with the original Team 7 (Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi) on a journey. In this alternate world, April seeks assistance from the current Hokage, Lady Tsunade, to get back to a transformed New York City. As is common in comic book collaborations, things don’t go smoothly for this protective operation. Team 7 and their escort encounter the Foot Clan, leading to a clash. However, this version of the Foot is swiftly vanquished by none other than the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, demonstrating the classic heroic trait of battling potential allies due to misunderstandings. The story concludes in a manner typical of comic crossovers, but the closing twist might catch many off guard.
Initially, when we consider cross-over comics like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto“, a question pops up – how will these cherished characters interact. Instead of imagining the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Team 7 accidentally traversing different universes, IDW’s mini-series sets things in motion by placing the turtles within the “Naruto-verse” from the get-go. New York City is now referred to as “Big Apple Village”, and the new visual designs for the turtles reflect their new environment. Although their backstories may have changed, writer Caleb Goellner skillfully portrays each character with precision.
One of the most interesting aspects of this crossover, and any comic book crossover that sees two universes smashed together, is how characters respond to these new interactions in some of the quieter moments. Highlights include Naruto and Sasuke reflecting on Baxter Stockman’s plans in relation to their own statuses and the dynamics between all the characters involved. Goellner plays well with the battles that he lays out before readers as we are able to see interesting interactions between the likes of Leonardo and Sasuke, Sakura and Raphael, and Donatello and Michaelangelo tag-teaming Naruto and his clones. It works well in terms of presenting the concept.
A potential rephrasing might be: “The premiere issue plunges directly into this fresh universe, which may leave some readers bewildered. To clarify, this is a new world where the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are integrated with Naruto’s, rather than the two original worlds colliding. Despite being entirely new Turtles, their personalities remain largely unchanged. However, it would have been helpful if the first issue had eased into the story a bit more gradually. Nevertheless, these concerns are minor in comparison to the overall enjoyment this comic offers.
Absolutely, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding the concept of “Big Apple Village” and how these fresh Turtle Heroes blend into their existing world. Earlier, I mentioned that one of my favorite aspects was the hint in the final panel about the characters’ pasts potentially deviating from what we readers might assume. Naruto has always excelled at exploring the tales of previous generations, and it seems this comic book crossover intends to continue this pattern.
In the realm of artistic contributions, Hendry Prasetya proves to be a valuable asset for this series. His work skillfully combines elements of comic book art and key aspects of anime that bring the potential Seventh Hokage and his companions to life vividly. The arrangement of panels, rich settings, and especially the dynamic and action-packed battle sequences perfectly encapsulate the personalities of all characters depicted. It’s a delicate balance to maintain the unique style established by Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto, and though Prasetya doesn’t follow exactly in his footsteps, he pays tribute to each character by infusing an anime-inspired aesthetic into his work.
In a thrilling blend of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Naruto”, issue #1 offers an explosion of ninja excitement, introducing innovative ideas and an unexpected universe that caught many off guard. Although there are minor glitches in this debut comic, they don’t diminish the overall enjoyment, providing something appealing to fans of both the Turtle squad and Naruto’s Team 7. This is a must-purchase for fans of either series, and I eagerly anticipate the unexpected twists that the crossover has in store.
