As a long-time gamer who has witnessed the evolution of both Tekken and Final Fantasy franchises, I must say, the addition of Clive Rosfield to the roster of Tekken 8 is a delightful surprise! The prospect of more characters from Final Fantasy joining the fight is tantalizing, and as a fan of both series, I can’t help but imagine the chaos Cloud or Tifa would bring to the King of Iron Fist Tournament.
Clive Rosfield has made his debut in the upcoming game, Tekken 8, marking a new collaboration with the Final Fantasy series. This marks the entry of the first character from the Final Fantasy franchise into the playable roster of Tekken 8. The lead character of Final Fantasy XVI is an intriguing choice for gamers, yet it appears that the partnership between Bandai Namco and Square Enix could extend beyond just Clive. In a recent conversation with IGN, the developers of Tekken 8 were questioned about the potential inclusion of additional characters from the franchise. According to producer Michael Murray (who also relayed comments from executive producer Katsuhiro Harada), the agreement between the two companies does not restrict them to only one character, and there’s a possibility that they might consider adding another character as well, stating it could be “cool” if they did so.
While this sounds pretty exciting, Murray was quick to add that “it’s not something we can decide alone.” That means Square Enix would have to sign off on any character that the development team might be interested in. It remains to be seen where things might go from here, but the prospect of additional Final Fantasy characters is pretty exciting. Clive is the lone Final Fantasy character in Tekken 8, but he is not the first to appear in the fighting game franchise; in Tekken 7, Final Fantasy XV protagonist Noctis Lucis Caelum similarly appeared as a DLC fighter. Noctis remains unavailable in Tekken 8, but it’s possible this could indicate a return for the character.
From a fan’s perspective, it seems like the Tekken developers might lean towards a more contemporary character instead of Noctis, who was introduced to the Tekken 7 roster just two years after the release of Final Fantasy XV. Given that the game isn’t as fresh in the minds of gamers now, it could be more appealing to opt for a character that is more widely recognized. Interestingly, IGN hinted at Cloud and Tifa from Final Fantasy VII as potential choices during their interview. Although the developers didn’t explicitly mention these characters, Square Enix might find it easier to approve either Cloud or Tifa since they are well-loved characters that are currently starring in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.
Players are still figuring out how Clive fits into the gameplay of Tekken 8, but the mechanics of Final Fantasy XVI made it smoother for developers to incorporate him in this universe. Whether a possible second character will blend as seamlessly remains uncertain, hinging on any agreements between Bandai Namco and Square Enix. Harada and Murray are open to introducing another character, yet that doesn’t guarantee it will happen. If fans of both franchises express enough interest, it could speed up the process!
