As a seasoned Tekken veteran with over two decades of combat under my belt, let me tell you about the art of sidestepping in Tekken 8. It’s not just about dodging left or right; it’s about reading your opponent, anticipating their moves, and executing that perfect dance of evasion at the right moment.
Got hit when standing behind him, welcome to Tekken 8 Sidestepping.
Bandai Namco’s fighting series has included sidestepping since Tekken 3.
But many players don’t know the ins and outs of the mechanics, so here’s our guide! #
Tekken 8 Sidestepping
Firstly, you are going to see this is a contentious topic online. You are going to see people crying about how it does or does not work. Also, someone is bound to mention Tekken 7 sidestepping and showcase the worst example!
This guide intends to clarify the methodology behind performing a sidestep, as well as providing insights on when it might be appropriate to do so.
Observe this: Despite what you might think, Tekken is actually a 3D game with dimensions along the X, Y, and Z axes. While some battles can appear to only move in the X and Y directions, it does possess the third dimension as well.
A skilled player understands their opponent and recognizes when it’s best to move aside. The direction of the evasion depends on who you’re up against.
To make our fighter evade, either a quick tap moves them left or right (sidestepping), while holding the tap keeps them moving in that direction continuously. For instance, Kazuya often leans slightly to the right during his attacks. If we predict this, we can generally dodge to the left and avoid most of his hits. However, it’s important to remember that not every one of his moves follows this pattern!
Mastering Tekken 8’s sidestepping hellsweeps can prove challenging, but it’s definitely achievable and worth the effort. A skilled player should be smooth with their movements and not rush to retaliate prematurely. If Kazuya is spinning towards you, hold your sidestep, let him complete his animation, then strike back effectively.
Even though your character is right behind him, his vulnerable area (hurtbox) expands during certain moves. This means if you attack immediately, you might end up within that expanded area. Instead, let the move finish and then strike back when his hurtbox shrinks again!
The Hurtbox
However, should you wish to observe Kaz in a live demonstration, be prepared for him to execute a helsweep into position 2. If you attempt to cut short his sidestep prematurely, you might find yourself unexpectedly struck from behind instead of witnessing him deliver a punch in front of him.
Although it can be quite frustrating, persistence is crucial when mastering Tekken 8’s sidestepping technique. Remember that this move is quite risky and challenging. If you aim to improve, spend time in training mode and during live matches, as understanding the matchups for specific moves or regularly consulting the sidestep chart will be essential for your progress.
However, some moves require a strategic side-step followed by a crouch. For instance, Kazuya’s homing downward 1,2 move, which strikes mid to high, can be dodged by sidestepping left to avoid the first hit. But if you continue moving after that, you might get hit.
In Tekken 8, there are two main options: moving forward to grab the block or squatting down for a full attack follow-up. Mastering the technique of sidestepping in Tekken 8 can be challenging due to its need for patience and quick readings. You’ll have to determine on the fly if a string of attacks is being aimed at you during your sidestep, or not.
Remember that each character’s ability to dodge sideways in Tekken 8 varies. Here’s a useful guide to help determine how often you might want to use this move based on your chosen character, with “Pass Rate” representing their proficiency in dodging, just for clarity.
Sidestep Pass rate for what? I’m bad at Tekken genuinely don’t know what this means

Sure, here’s a suggestion: While Lillit was specifically designed for this task, Jack might not be as inclined to perform it consistently.
In case you’re struggling to determine if a move can be sidestepped, don’t hesitate to check the replay! The replay can show you how to sidestep specific moves, but it might not cover all of them. So, go ahead and explore the lab, practice brother, and improve your skills!
