Tekken Boss Once Tried to Add KFC's Colonel Sanders as a Playable Fighter

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen some truly bizarre collaborations that have somehow managed to work beautifully, like Noctis and Negan in Tekken 7. However, the idea of Colonel Sanders joining the fray seemed, at first, utterly preposterous. Yet, the unpredictable nature of the Tekken universe has always kept us on our toes, so I wasn’t entirely surprised when Katsuhiro Harada shared his audacious attempt to bring the KFC mascot into the game.

As a die-hard Tekken fan, I can’t help but share an interesting tidbit from Katsuhiro Harada himself, the mastermind behind our beloved fighting game series. In one of his past interviews, he mentioned a whimsical idea he once had – incorporating the iconic Colonel Sanders from KFC as a playable character in a previous Tekken installment!

In a chat with TheGamer, Harada shared an interesting anecdote about visiting KFC’s Japanese headquarters and proposing the idea of incorporating Colonel Sanders into Tekken. However, his suggestion was met with disapproval and swiftly dismissed. This incident was further discussed by Tekken 8 designer Michael Murray, who cited it as a reason for the difficulty in realizing the much-desired Waffle House stage that fans eagerly anticipate.

Harada visited Kentucky Fried Chicken with the intention of meeting Colonel Sanders, but they weren’t receptive to the idea, as Murray explained. Later on, Colonel Sanders showed up in games, suggesting perhaps there was a challenge he had to overcome first. This incident underscores how tricky such negotiations can be.

Interestingly enough, it seems that KFC could be more receptive than ever before to the appearance of Colonel Sanders in Tekken. Lately, the fast food company has been associating itself more closely with video games through its “KFC Gaming” initiative. This led to the creation of a dating sim game titled “I Love You, Colonel Sanders!“, which surprisingly garnered positive reviews on Steam.

Generally speaking, the collaboration between KFC and Tekken, which was previously a focus for gaming content at KFC, appears to have ended. Consequently, KFC may no longer be interested in such a partnership. However, given that the prospect of a crossover is more feasible now than it was before, it might be worthwhile for Harada to revisit KFC’s offices again to see if they would consider another collaboration attempt.
