As a cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement about my journey in the world of cinema. I’m Eve Hewson, born and raised in Dublin, and I’ve had the privilege to star alongside legends like Tom Hanks in Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies, where I played his on-screen daughter. Then, I was fortunate enough to don the hood as Maid Marian opposite Taron Egerton’s Robin Hood. My career took another thrilling turn with Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes.

Your full name is Memphis Eve Sunny Day Iris Hewson. Did you like it as a kid?

As a kid, I used to find being different frustrating – I hadn’t yet grasped that being unique was awesome. I’d often ponder the origin of my city connection, Memphis, with my parents. They’d tell me, ‘You were conceived in Memphis,’ or ‘It’s because you were born with a full head of hair, resembling Elvis.’ To be truthful, I believe they might not fully understand it themselves.

Did your dad give you any advice about navigating stardom?

Throughout my life, I’ve received an abundance of guidance, which has been truly delightful. At one point, someone told me that if fame ever befalls you on a grand scale, you’ll likely experience a period of strangeness lasting approximately seven years. During this time, you might come to believe that every action of yours carries great significance, and it’s essential to remain vigilant about this.

And have you?

I haven’t really hit that kind of stardom yet! I’m not J-Lo. When I get there, I’ll let you know.

Ten Questions with Eve Hewson

As a film enthusiast, can you imagine the thrill of being in a movie with heavyweights like Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, and Dakota Fanning? With me as the lead character, was the pressure to deliver a top-notch performance overwhelming? Absolutely!

Frankly, I aspire to take center stage! That’s my goal here. I found the concept of portraying an outsider, joining this peculiar family and observing their eccentricities through the lens of my character, Amelia, particularly intriguing. My character is truthful, yet the rest of the cast seemed to relish in their over-the-top antics. To put it simply, the series exists in a unique, bizarre realm. It’s hard to categorize – it’s dramatic, but also humorous, thanks to the extraordinary performances delivered by the entire ensemble. I believe audiences are going to find it irresistible. In essence, it’s an exhilarating, unpredictable adventure.

What was it like having Nicole Kidman as a prospective mother-in-law?

I was astonished to discover that she was a part of the production. My representatives had frequently mentioned this “Nicole” figure, and I found myself asking, “Which Nicole are they talking about?” When she finally appeared on set, everyone’s excitement was palpable. Watching her at work is truly captivating. With years of experience under her belt, she never ceases to amaze me with her dedication. It’s amazing!

The series opens with a choreographed dance routine on the beach. Tell us about that…

The email stated, ‘You must master this dance during Christmas.’ The reaction was a mix of confusion and excitement as people quickly said, ‘I’m reaching out to my representative!’ However, what followed was an exclusive dance lesson with the choreographer of Dua Lipa. By that point, we were quite close, and it turned out to be our final scene, filmed on a sunny beach, with everyone simply beaming. A moment reminiscent of ‘Mamma Mia!’ for us.

Did you catch “Behind Her Eyes”? It became incredibly popular due to an unexpected plot point involving out-of-body experiences, or astral projection, if you will. Ever given it a watch?

Absolutely, we’ve all taken a class. For real. Remember the sensation when you’re on the verge of drifting off to sleep and you feel as if you’re about to lose consciousness? If you manage to seize that instant and sit up instead, that’s essentially what astral projection entails.

We actually are like sisters. We’re very close – and there is a sisters’ WhatsApp group

After completing the second season of Bad Sisters, do you genuinely feel a bond with Sharon Horgan, Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle, and Sarah Greene, as if they were your real sisters?

We actually are like sisters. I just spent my whole weekend with them, and there is a sisters’ WhatsApp group. We’re very close.

Ten Questions with Eve Hewson

You considered giving up acting at one point. Why was that?

During a movie shoot, I encountered an unpleasant situation that left me questioning its purpose. I’m not keen on enduring consistent mistreatment, so I prefer to steer clear of such situations. I believe many actors have had similar experiences. It’s like a complex mix of admiration and frustration when it comes to this profession.
