As a movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the news of Teri Garr’s passing has left me both saddened and in awe. Having grown up in an era where her comedic brilliance graced our screens regularly, it’s hard not to feel a personal loss.
Actress Teri Garr, famed for her humorous parts in shows like Friends and movies such as Dumb and Dumber, passed away at the age of 79. Among those expressing condolences is Lisa Kudrow.
On October 29th, it was confirmed that Garr had passed away. Her representative, Heidi Schaeffer, informed the Associated Press that her death was due to complications from Multiple Sclerosis, a condition she’d been living with since 1999.
Among the most memorable characters Garr portrayed was Phoebe Buffay’s biological mother, Phoebe Abbott, appearing in three installments of the popular series Friends.
Following news of her death, Phoebe Buffay star Kudrow paid tribute to Garr.
In a statement given to People, Kudrow expressed, “Teri Garr was a comic acting prodigy who had a profound impact on me, and I’m confident many others share this sentiment. I consider myself incredibly fortunate and thankful for the opportunity to have collaborated with Teri Garr.
Garr began his life in the year 1944, learning dance from a young age, and later securing minor acting positions on television and in movies during his teenage years.
Throughout her acting career, she appeared in movies such as The Conversation, Young Frankenstein, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, After Hours, Mr. Mom, and Dumb and Dumber.
She was nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA, both in the Supporting Actress category, for her role in Dustin Hoffman’s romantic comedy film Tootsie.
In the period from 1993 to 1996, she had been wedded to John O’Neil only once, and she has a daughter named Molly O’Neil who survives her.
As a loyal admirer, I too paid my respects to the late Garr, much like Mel Brooks did, as he was the one behind the camera when he directed the actress in Young Frankenstein.
In a tweet under its new name X, he expressed his regret upon learning of Teri Garr’s death. She was incredibly gifted and hilarious.
Working with her on Young Frankenstein was always enjoyable, thanks to her infectious wit and energetic personality. Her hilarious German accent often left us laughing out loud. She’ll truly be missed by everyone here.
Simultaneously, Michael Keaton, his co-star from “Mr Mom,” expressed on Instagram: “Today I dreaded and knew it would come. Overlooking her exceptional acting and comedic skills, she was an exceptional person. Not only fantastic to work with, but delightful to be around.
“AND go back and watch her comedic work-Man, was she great!! RIP girl.”
Paul Feig, both writer and director, expressed his sorrow in a post: “Oh dear, this news is heartbreaking. Teri was an iconic figure. She was incredibly funny, stunningly beautiful, and incredibly kind. I was fortunate to collaborate with her in 2006, and she exceeded all my expectations. She was one of my comedy idols. It’s hard to express the depth of my affection for her. This loss is truly significant.
