Terminator’s Iconic “I’ll Be Back” Line
In a recently released Netflix documentary featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, it was disclosed that the actor and James Cameron held contrasting views regarding the dialogue for the Terminator’s pivotal scene. It appears that Schwarzenegger found the original script less than appealing.
During the filming of a particular scene, we’re portraying a police station. The dialogue is “I’ll come back,” but it wasn’t intended to be a dramatic or significant moment, Cameron explained. Instead, he wanted it to be a casual line like, “No problem, I’ll come back.” For some reason, Arnold didn’t say this. So, I suggested that he should just say, “I’ll be back,” and keep things straightforward.
Later on, Schwarzenegger pointed out that the phrase “I’ll be back” might not suit his character well since he is a robot. Instead, he believed that “I will be back” would sound more mechanical and align better with how his character would speak.
He asked, ‘Are you the author here?’ Schwarzenegger inquired. To which I responded, ‘No.’ He then retorted, ‘Then don’t instruct me on how to compose.’
Indeed, it turns out that Cameron’s assertion was correct, as that particular phrase remains among the most frequently cited lines from movies across history.
