Terminator Zero Showrunner Explains Why The Anime Needed to be Different

As a long-time fan of the Terminator franchise, I have to admit, I was initially skeptical when I heard about “Terminator Zero” taking a different route and focusing less on the Connor family. However, after reading Mattson Tomlin’s interview with Polygon, my excitement for this anime has reached new heights!

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be witnessing “Terminator Zero” on Netflix come August 29th! The creative minds at Production I.G. are joining forces with Netflix to redefine our understanding of the battle against Skynet. What sets this first “Terminator” anime apart is the absence of the Connor family, a staple in the series’ narrative up until now. This new direction has left many of us fans intrigued, as traditionally, the films have revolved around Sarah and/or John Connor’s fight against Skynet’s mechanical army. In a recent chat with showrunner Mattson Tomlin, he shed light on the transformative changes that shaped the upcoming “Terminator” anime.

In an interview with Polygon, Tomlin discussed his approach to a Terminator project that didn’t focus on the Connors, stating, “Was it difficult? Not particularly. I believe that the movies have been centering around the Connors for quite some time now. With this new show, my aim was to honor the exceptional talents who had previously worked on this franchise, from the first film right up to the last.” In a bold move for the Terminator series, the latest movie, Terminator: Dark Fate, opted to kill off John Connor, as depicted in the events following Terminator 2.

Tomlin later seized the moment to clarify why the upcoming Production I.G. anime will be set in Japan: “So far, all our films have been set in the U.S., primarily on the U.S.-Mexico border. This family saga has been a central theme, but this animated series is a first for this franchise. Additionally, I’m collaborating with Japanese partners, so it occurred to me that we haven’t explored much about Japan within our franchise. In fact, there’s no information anywhere in the series about what’s happening elsewhere globally. For instance, we know Russia might launch nuclear attacks, but what’s happening beyond that remains unknown.”

Later on, Tomlin expressed his perspective regarding the overall Terminator series and where Zero fits in, stating, “The initial film is essentially a love story between a man and a woman, as their child is crucial, though it’s not emphasized in the movie itself. However, it’s about this couple bonding, and the second movie tells the tale of a mother’s devotion to her son. In the midst of all this, there’s this substitute father figure who resembles the man who tried to harm her earlier, and she must grapple with what that implies. Therefore, for Terminator Zero, it was essential to incorporate lethal robots, nuclear annihilation, and a family narrative that carries significant emotional resonance. To me, this is the essence of Terminator.”
