Territory: Is This New Netflix Series the Next Yellowstone?

As a die-hard fan of Western dramas and someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the dusty plains of Montana with the Dutton family, I must say that “Territory” has piqued my interest like no other show since Yellowstone first graced our screens. Hailing from Down Under, this new series feels like a breath of fresh, slightly more arid air into the genre, and I’m here for it!

For several years now, “Yellowstone” has dominated television screens, often giving the impression that it’s single-handedly revitalizing cable dramas. Created by Taylor Sheridan, this neo-Western series has been a massive success since its premiere, shattering records and spawning an expansive cowboy universe across various platforms. It’s no wonder other networks and streaming services have attempted to replicate the Yellowstone formula. This week, Netflix appears to have entered the race for the “next Yellowstone,” and it might be the most convincing attempt yet at duplicating the original’s essence.

The recently introduced show titled “Territory” bears a striking resemblance to the popular American series “Yellowstone“, almost as if it were an Australian adaptation. Its narrative, scenery, mood, and characters seem to have been influenced directly by the acclaimed Paramount Network production.

The show focuses on the Lawson clan, who manage the largest cattle station across Australia, reminiscent of John Dutton’s family in Yellowstone portrayed by Kevin Costner. Unlike John Dutton, Robert Taylor’s character Colin Lawson is the head of a family with grown children and no definite succession strategy. The deterioration of the Lawson dynasty, coupled with the conspicuous power void due to the succession dilemma, invites their major adversaries to seize the chance for an attack. You can read more about the plot in the official summary provided below.

If the leading cattle station on a global scale lacks a definite heir, internal disputes within the Lawson family risk causing them to splinter. Perceiving that this once formidable dynasty is weakening, influential groups such as rival ranchers, desert gangsters, indigenous leaders, and wealthy miners capitalize on the opportunity, seeking to seize control.

In essence, “Territory” appears strikingly similar to “Yellowstone”, except it’s located in Australia rather than the U.S. The series trailer reinforces this idea, but also hints at areas where “Yellowstone” and “Territory” could potentially diverge a bit.

In the TV show “Territory”, some actors may seem quite familiar to fans of Netflix series. Although she’s most recognized for her role on Fringe, Anna Torv, one of Territory’s stars, was a significant character in both seasons of the popular Netflix show Mindhunter. Additionally, another member of the Territory cast, Sam Corlett, played a role in 14 episodes of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and starred as Leif Eriksson in Vikings: Valhalla.

As a dedicated fan, I’d like to highlight that the stellar cast of the remaining segments of “Territory” features Michael Dorman, who brilliantly portrays Joe Pickett, alongside Philippa Northeast, known for her role in “The Newsreader”. The ensemble also includes Sara Wiseman, Dan Wyllie, Clarence Ryan, Jay Ryan, Sam Delich, Kylah Day, Jake Ryan, Hamilton Morris, Vince Poletto, Joe Klocek, Tyler Spencer, Tuulie Narkie, and Beau Jones. What a remarkable lineup!

Since its release, “Territory” has been steadily gaining popularity on Netflix, moving up the ranks to become the third most-watched TV show on the platform this past Sunday, with comparisons to shows like “Yellowstone” and other successful Netflix series contributing to its rise.

With more and more people becoming aware of Territory, and devoted Yellowstone viewers gradually realizing its presence, there’s a strong possibility that this new Australian series could experience a surge in popularity over the next few weeks. At present, only six episodes of Territory are available to watch, but with fans eagerly awaiting updates about potential renewals, it won’t be long before they start looking for such news.
