Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown Developer Discusses Offline Mode, Solo Play, and More in New Video

As someone who’s been a diehard fan of the Test Drive series since its inception, I find myself both excited and a bit perplexed about Solar Crown. On one hand, I’m delighted to see that the developers are addressing the concerns about the always-online nature and the connection issues.

After some time, the initial problems with Nacon’s “Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown,” particularly the connection issues experienced at launch, have been addressed. Yet, there remains a contentious issue concerning its always-online functionality, which sparked controversy when servers experienced downtime. Furthermore, certain players express dissatisfaction due to the game’s multiplayer aspect, preferring instead to play alone.

In a recent developer diary, creative director Alain Jarniou and game director Guillaume Guinet discuss plans for KT Racing’s upcoming project, focusing on offline mode and the solo gaming experience. While they didn’t specify an immediate release, this feature is being developed to ensure that the game remains playable after Solar Crown enters its “end-of-life phase.

Guinet stated that some elements should stay the same while others need to change, and he identified three key areas. First, he mentioned the final stage of the game, transitioning it towards an offline format so it can be distributed effectively.

In addition, there’s the single-player mode, which we emphasize on racing since it’s the primary gameplay aspect of Test Drive Unlimited. Players might enjoy exploring freely and more, but to advance in the game, they must engage in races. To make this experience simple and clear, we aim to streamline it as much as possible.

To preserve the multiplayer aspect that Solar Crown is known for, we aim to keep its MMO characteristics alive within free roam areas and hubs. This involves promoting player interactions and encouraging collaboration. If we decide to incorporate this in races, there will always be an option to wait for fellow players.

In the game “Test Drive Unlimited,” it’s essential to accommodate each player’s unique playstyle. Since some players might prefer to compete individually rather than in teams, we need to ensure there’s room for solo progression. We’re working hard to make this possible as soon as we can.
