In the latest update of Teamfight Tactics (TFT Patch 15.1), Riot Games is introducing significant changes. The main focus is on a comprehensive revamp of unit roles and items, as represented by the K.O. Coliseum. The centerpiece? A completely transformed TFT Role System that alters how champions acquire mana and engage with items.
Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is TFT Roles Revamped?
Earlier, the roles of units in TFT primarily guided which items to equip for a champion. However, now, roles are based on how these units act during combat, particularly their mana-gaining behavior. This expansion allows for more creative design possibilities and addresses issues like splash damage accidentally triggering enemy ultimate abilities.
Every unit in TFT now has two role components:
- Damage Type:
- Attack (AD-based)
- Magic (AP-based)
- Hybrid (uses both)
- Team Role:
- Tank: Gains mana when taking damage
- Fighter: Durable frontline with Omnivamp
- Assassin: Mobile, less-targeted melee damage
- Marksman: Ranged basic attackers
- Caster: Ranged spellcasters with passive mana regen
- Specialist: Unique mechanics like Kayle or Viktor
In the revamped TFT Roles system, there are a total of 18 different role combinations, not all of which appear in every grouping. This system allows units to gain mana by performing their designated functions: tanks take damage, casters use their abilities, and assassins initiate attacks.
Why Change the Mana System?
In the former setup, each combat unit was allotted 10 mana for an attack, with extra mana earned through receiving damage. This resulted in:
*Simplified version:* Each unit received 10 mana for attacking, and gained additional mana from getting hurt. This caused:
- Melee fighters abusing Omnivamp in long fights
- Casters prioritizing attack speed over mana items
- Tanks struggling with huge mana pools
- Weird interactions with AoE feeding enemy carries
The novel method simplifies the process of energy creation, making it feel instinctive. Assailants are now incentivized for assaults, while defenders build energy by absorbing harm – eliminating any cumbersome exceptions.
Item Changes in Patch 15.1
With the arrival of TFT Patch 15.1, we’re introducing a substantial overhaul to the TFT Roles Revamped system. This update brings about numerous changes to items as follows:
Key Modifications:
- Mana → Mana Regen:
Items now grant mana regen, not flat starting mana. This smooths power spikes and scales better throughout combat. - New Keyword – Lifeline:
All effects that trigger at low HP (like shields or untargetability) now fall under the Lifeline tag. - No More Unique Tags on Crafted Items:
Items like Blue Buff or Edge of Night are no longer unique. You can stack them if you want—your comp, your call.
Key Item Reworks:
- Blue Buff: Now grants 5 mana regen, 15 AD, and 15 AP. Not unique.
- Morellonomicon: Drops attack speed, gains 2 mana regen.
- Adaptive Helm: Gives extra mana gain based on your champion’s role.
- Giant Slayer: Stronger bonus damage vs. Tanks.
- Protector’s Vow: Lifeline now grants mana and a shield.
Radiant and Artifact versions of these items have also been reworked to match the new system.
What It Means for Your Games
Rest assured, you won’t have to start from scratch. The ‘frontline’ and ‘backline’ positions of your champions remain unchanged. However, with the updated TFT Roles, the scaling and ability casting mechanisms for your champions have been streamlined and made more coherent.
The latest upgrade allows Riot Games to design innovative, magical unit categories, such as melee spellcasters, and eradicate confusing or counter-intuitive aspects within the gameplay experience.
With TFT Patch 15.1, set to launch on July 29th, you’ll find refreshed role mechanics and an overhauled item system ready for action in the K.O. Coliseum, perfect timing for your upcoming tournament!
