That '90s Show: Laura Prepon Talks Recreating That '70s Show's Opening Credits

As a dedicated fan of the original ‘That ’70s Show’, experiencing the nostalgic recreation of its opening credits in ‘That ’90s Show‘ Part 3 was like stepping into a time machine. The montage of characters driving Kitty around, accompanied by the iconic theme song, brought back so many memories and emotions that I could almost smell the pot from the Forman kitchen.

In Part 3 of “That ’90s Show”, the characters from the spin-off replicated the famous opening sequence from “That ’70s Show”. In episode 6, Kitty’s driver’s license got temporarily revoked. Towards the end of the episode, they put together a montage where various characters drove Kitty around while the original theme song from “That ’70s Show” played. Each transition was similar to those in the opening credits of the original series, and Leia imitated Donna’s pose of placing her hands on the dashboard during one scene – something that series director Laura Prepon (who portrayed Donna in the original show) had discussed prior to filming.

The audience found it a special moment, and it was just as thrilling for Prepon, who seems to still harbor a tender affection for her role as Donna.

“Wow, that was incredible,” Prepon expressed to EW. “It was absolutely surreal. More folks had to squeeze into the Vista Cruiser for this scene, making it even more enjoyable. When they first played the song and we all joined in, I got goosebumps. I thought, ‘This is fantastic that they’re including this.’ And I’m thrilled that it was incorporated into the show. It instantly transported me back – but now, I’m standing outside directing the scene, and it warmed my heart.”

Here’s the official synopsis for That ’90s Show Part 3:

1996 finds Leia Forman back in Point Place for another summer of merriment with her friends and grandparents, Kitty and Red. The narrative resumes straight from the Forman kitchen, where Red and Kitty have just arrived home from Paris, only to discover a large hole in the wall. However, this is merely one of several challenges that Leia encounters. As new bonds are forged and existing ones deepen, friendships are put to the test. Just when everything seems to be falling into place, an old acquaintance reappears to stir up trouble once more. As summer draws to a close, the group grapples with Leia’s impending departure, but this time she’s determined to stand her ground.

The cast of “That ’90s Show” includes Kurtwood Smith, Debra Jo Rupp, Callie Haverda, Ashley Aufderheide, Mace Coronel, Maxwell Donovan, Reyn Doi, and Sam Morelos. Additionally, the creators Bonnie and Terry Turner, along with their daughter Lindsey Turner, showrunner/executive producer Gregg Mettler, and executive producers Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner are returning to Point Place.
