As a seasoned gamer and Marvel enthusiast with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that the revelation about Avengers Tower in Thunderbolts has me more than a little intrigued! The fact that Kevin Feige kept us guessing for so long only adds to the anticipation.
For quite some time, enthusiasts have pondered the fate of Avengers Tower, formerly known as Stark Tower, after Tony Stark left and the Avengers ceased using it. At first glance, this seemed like an insignificant detail, but when producer Kevin Feige began evading questions about it, suggesting that there was more to learn, curiosity grew. Lately, he mentioned that the owner would soon be unveiled, hinting that Marvel had always been aware of the character’s identity and intentions for the iconic building. It seems now that we will find out who the new owner is in the upcoming Marvel team-up film, Thunderbolts.
As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but notice some intriguing shots from the Thunderbolts teaser trailer. It seems that several scenes depict our favorite superheroes hanging out at Avengers Tower. One scene in particular, toward the end of the trailer, appears to be set in a partially dismantled version of Tony Stark’s iconic skyline bar. If you haven’t seen it yet, I’ve linked the trailer above, and there’s a screenshot of that very moment below.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed something interesting while exploring the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It seems that the Avengers Tower in the MCU corresponds to the MetLife skyscraper in New York City in real life. The view from where I’m standing on Twitter (as Bejt), appears remarkably similar when you consider its location relative to the United Nations building and Gotham Point.
The movie unites a group of previous Marvel villains, such as Yelena Belova (played by Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell). It appears that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) has brought them together, but the teamwork doesn’t seem to be running smoothly.
In the enticing preview, the conflicting allegiances and affections among the characters frequently erupt, suggesting that Val is not only in charge or managing Avengers Tower at present, but also appears to be assembling a new team with a more ominous twist on the traditional Avengers.
In a recent interview, Harbour stated, “We aren’t the heroes you might think we are. We lack the capabilities and reliability that one would associate with figures like Captain America. Being punctual isn’t really something we excel at.
Comparatively speaking, Thunderbolts* resembles DC’s Suicide Squad in terms of its roster of villains turned heroes. However, unlike the Suicide Squad, it seems that many characters in Thunderbolts* have a degree of independence from the team and are drawn to heroism as a means to find purpose in their lives.
Thunderbolts* will arrive in theaters on May 2nd.
