‘That’s The Rudest Thing You Can Say.’ Someone Just Shared A Hot Scream Fact With Matthew Lillard, And He Did Not Hold Back

Among the highly awaited horror films slated for release next year is the seventh installment of the “Scream” series. The revival of Ghostface is particularly thrilling as several original stars, including Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott, are set to reappear, along with newcomers like Matthew Lillard, who was one of the first actors to wear the mask. When a long-time “Scream” cast member learned an unexpected fact about his role in the franchise, he responded with an outstanding reaction.

When Matthew Lillard walked the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of The Life Of Chuck this week, a journalist with Entertainment Tonight stated how the original Scream is about to turn 30 years old next year while framing a question about his upcoming return. Here’s how the actor responded:

You mentioned that Scream is going to be 30 years old next year, right? That’s quite a blunt comment to make on the red carpet. [Laughs] I find that rather uncouth. I must admit, I wasn’t aware the film was that vintage.

Matthew Lillard appeared quite cheerful during the interview when he labeled a statement as “the rudest thing,” demonstrating his surprise that the classic film is nearly three decades old. It’s obvious that such a comment reveals Lillard’s age (being 55, although he doesn’t appear it), and it seems he wasn’t expecting to reflect on the elapsed time. No doubt, it feels like yesterday for him when he portrayed Stu!

The film titled “Scream” was initially released in Los Angeles on December 18, 1996, and expanded to other theaters two days later. Surprisingly, it had a relatively low opening weekend at the box office. However, its status as a Wes Craven horror movie sparked interest among audiences through word of mouth. As a result, it climbed up the charts and stayed in the top ten movies for nine consecutive weeks. Eventually, “Scream” ranked as the 13th highest-grossing film of 1996 according to Box Office Mojo.

In his early acting career, Llllard appeared in “Scream”, which was one of his initial films. Later, he became well-known for playing different roles in movies like “SLC Punk!”, “She’s All That”, and “Scooby-Doos”. However, since his character met a tragic end in the first movie, there were no opportunities for him to rejoin the series afterward.

For years, fans have speculated about Stu’s fate, with Lillard occasionally fueling these discussions by hinting that Stu might still be alive. Now, it has been confirmed that Lillard will reprise his role as Stu in “Scream 7”. Here’s what he had to say about returning to the franchise:

I’m really thrilled to return, and I’m eagerly anticipating the response from fans about this new project. I have high hopes that it will turn out wonderfully… As for [Stu], he’ll be featured in Scream 7. That’s all I can share at this moment.

Lillard has been skillfully avoiding spoilers since he got casted! The upcoming “Scream 7” is quite intriguing as not only does it bring Lillard back as Stu, but also Scott Foley’s character Roman Bridger, who met his end in an earlier film, and David Arquette’s Dewey Riley, who perished in the fifth installment. It certainly raises questions about how the writers plan to resurrect these deceased characters for the next movie, but we’re definitely eager to see how it unfolds.

Under the direction of original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson, and written by Guy Busick (who collaborated with James Vanderbilt on the last two Scream films), “Scream 7” was filmed earlier this year for a theater release on February 27, 2026.
