As a music enthusiast with a keen eye for visual storytelling, I must say this year has been a true feast for my senses! From the heartfelt ballads of Alexander Stewart and Joyner Lucas to the electrifying beats of Megan Thee Stallion and Ariana Grande, the diversity in sound and style is simply breathtaking.
One of the most iconic award shows is back.
The MTV Video Music Awards, set to be broadcast live on September 10 from UBS Arena in New York, are fast approaching, and the nominations have been unveiled. Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and SZA have garnered numerous nominations this year, promising a tough contest – not forgetting some fresh faces as well. Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan, who gained prominence in 2024, will be receiving their first-ever recognition at the MTV event.
Despite leading with 10 nominations for the VMAs, the artist behind the Eras Tour is still in contention to shatter another record if she wins Video of the Year for “Fortnight” at this year’s event.
Following her victories for “All Too Well” in 2022 and “Anti-Hero” in 2023, Taylor Swift has a chance to become the first artist to win the award three times in a row and potentially five times total (having previously won for “Bad Blood” in 2015 and “You Need to Calm Down” in 2019). Moreover, “Fortnight” has secured eight nominations for her at this year’s VMAs, and she is also nominated for Best Pop and Artist of the Year.
Additionally, given his appearance in Taylor’s collaboration, Post Malone trails closely behind her with nine nominations, including two nods in the Best Collaboration category for “Fortnight” and “I Had Some Help” alongside Morgan Wallen. Simultaneously, Ariana continues to captivate the music industry with a radiant charm, garnering six nominations, tying with Eminem and the “Please, Please, Please” artist.
In other significant mentions, Olivia Rodrigo is recognized in four categories related to her “Guts” era videos – such as “obsessed” in Best Cinematography, “bad idea, right?” in Best Art Direction, and “get him back!” in Best Visual Effects. Megan Thee Stallion’s video for “BOA” received nominations in four categories including Best Hip-Hop, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Visual Effects. Additionally, she was nominated in the Best Collaboration category for her work with GloRilla on “Wanna Be”.
Vote for your preferred artist, or even their favorite artist, at vote.mtv.com before August 30 (or until September 10 for the “Best New Artist” category) to help ensure their victory!
In the meantime, keep reading to see every nomination at the 2024 VMAs.
