The 5 Best Batman Action Scenes (Christopher Nolan Only Has One)

As a seasoned film critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I’ve had the privilege to witness some truly remarkable cinematic moments – from the gritty streets of Gotham City to the soaring heights of Metropolis. Today, we delve into the heart-pounding action sequences that have left an indelible mark on me and, undoubtedly, on countless other fans.

Starting with Christopher Nolan‘s masterpiece, “The Dark Knight Rises,” the sewer battle between Batman and Bane stood out as a testament to human resilience. The gritty, close-quarters combat felt personal and raw, making the audience question whether our hero could truly prevail against such an adversary.

Fast forward to 2016, and Zack Snyder’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” brought us a titular battle that was as iconic as it was epic. The six-minute showdown between the two titans was a thrilling spectacle that left me on the edge of my seat. However, I must admit, watching Batman take on a CGI monster with a name like Doomsday felt more like a chore than a fight to remember.

Now, let us journey to 2022 and Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.” The car chase scene featuring the Penguin was nothing short of exhilarating. The Tumbler may have been invincible in the past, but the Batmobile in this film felt vulnerable, adding a layer of tension that made the chase all the more exciting. I found myself holding my breath as Colin Farrell’s Penguin scrambled to escape our caped crusader.

In conclusion, each of these action sequences offered something unique and memorable, but if I were to choose one fight that encapsulates the essence of Batman, it would be the sewer battle from “The Dark Knight Rises.” The grit, the intensity, and the personal stakes made it a truly unforgettable moment in film history.

And as for a joke? Ah, my dear readers, I must admit that after watching so many superhero films, I sometimes find myself questioning whether these titanic battles are really necessary. After all, couldn’t they just settle their differences over tea and crumpets? But alas, that’s a story for another day!

Hey there, fellow movie enthusiasts! As a lifelong fan of the Dark Knight, I can confidently say that the Batman franchise is nothing short of legendary. With over a dozen live-action films under its belt (excluding his brief appearance in Suicide Squad), it’s clear that this series has left an indelible mark on pop culture. Over the years, we’ve seen five distinct eras of blockbuster movies, each with its unique take on the Caped Crusader: Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, Christopher Nolan, DCEU, and Matt Reeves.

But what truly sets this franchise apart are the epic brawls that have graced our screens. From heart-pounding confrontations to bone-crunching battles, these fights have become iconic moments in the annals of cinematic history. So, without further ado, let me share with you my picks for the top Batman fight scenes and what makes them so memorable.

1. Batman vs. Jack Napier (Batman): This is where it all began – the first ever Batman film introduced us to Michael Keaton’s brooding Dark Knight as he faced off against Jack Napier, played by Jack Nicholson’s unforgettable Joker. The rooftop fight scene was a masterclass in tension and suspense, with a climax that still holds up today.

2. Batman vs. Bane (The Dark Knight Rises): In this Nolan-verse classic, Christian Bale’s Batman faced off against Tom Hardy’s monstrous Bane in an epic battle that spanned the streets of Gotham and the cold, dark depths of a subterranean prison. The fight was brutal, intense, and left audiences on the edge of their seats.

3. Batman vs. Superman (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice): This modern-day showdown between two titans pitted Ben Affleck’s Batman against Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel in a battle that tested the limits of their powers and left us questioning who was truly righteous. The fight was a visual spectacle, with stunning CGI effects that elevated the stakes for these iconic characters.

4. Batman vs. Joker (The Dark Knight): This fight took place not on the streets of Gotham but in a chaotic hospital as Heath Ledger’s Joker sought revenge against his former partner, Harvey Dent. The scene was a tense and brutal display of the Joker’s madness and Batman’s determination to uphold justice, culminating in one of the most memorable moments in superhero film history.

5. Batman vs. Catwoman (The Dark Knight Rises): In the final act of The Dark Knight Rises, Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman joined forces with Bane to take down Batman. This fight was a testament to Selina Kyle’s cunning and resourcefulness, as well as Batman’s unwavering resolve. The scene showcased the complex relationship between the two characters, adding an emotional depth to their physical confrontation.

These fights are more than just action sequences; they embody the essence of the Batman franchise – a gritty, intense, and visually stunning exploration of good versus evil. Each one leaves a lasting impression, making the Batman franchise a must-watch for any serious moviegoer. So grab your popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the ride as we delve deeper into the world of Gotham City’s guardian!

Exceptions were limited only to live-action film sequences, excluding a climactic fight scene like in “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”. However, despite its flaws, the DC Extended Universe provided Batman with some outstanding action scenes.

Ascending Gotham Cathedral in Batman (1989)

1989’s top-earning film and an undeniable pop culture powerhouse, Tim Burton’s Batman, remains a significant addition to superhero cinema lore. Unlike many other films in this genre, it devotes more attention to fleshing out the Joker and Batman/Bruce Wayne characters rather than overwhelming audiences with action scenes. However, the last 30 minutes or so are filled with some of the most thrilling sequences seen in any Batman film up to that point.

In awe, I can’t help but remember the thrilling spectacle of the Joker’s parade, complete with the enchanting tunes of Prince, and Batman’s valiant effort in thwarting the Joker’s nefarious plans. Yet, among all the excitement, what truly stood out was the Joker leading Vicki Vale up the towering Gotham Cathedral, with the tireless Batman hot on their heels. Remarkably, despite his injuries, the Caped Crusader managed to take down one by one, the Joker’s most trusted guards.

Two-Face’s Trap in Batman Forever (1995)

The Schumacher-directed Batman films, specifically those starring Schumacher, represent a significant drop in quality compared to Burton’s tenure with the character. However, it’s challenging to dismiss that the director of “The Lost Boys” excelled at creating thrilling action scenes. Notably, even the film “Batman & Robin” contains some memorable action moments, such as Robin shouting at the flying Batmobile following Batman detaching his motorcycle.

In my humble opinion, while both “Batman Forever” and “Batman & Robin” have their fair share of excitement, “Batman Forever” tends to outshine the latter due to its avoidance of excessive, over-the-top moments that some might refer to as ‘shark-jumping.’ Among the most memorable scenes is Two-Face’s trap designed for Batman. At the Riddler’s grand gala, Two-Face orchestrates a plan, hoping to lure Batman into action. True to form, Batman takes the bait, and Two-Face’s henchmen guide him through a tube that leads to a harrowing experience – a barrage of flames. This sequence, much like the rest of the movie, is vibrant, playful, and at times, even a bit too campy (Two-Face’s line about Batman not dying could have been toned down). However, the expression on Batman’s face as he emerges from the flames offers a glimpse into the depth and darkness that was somewhat missing in this film. It might not have been entirely reminiscent of Burton’s vision, but it would have come close. #ReleaseTheSchumacherCut.

Batman vs. Bane in The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

In The Dark Knight Rises, there are two intense battles between Bane and the main character that stand out significantly. Among these confrontations, the one in the sewers stands out as particularly impactful, even for a film that some might find lackluster. This scene is unique because it feels deeply personal. While The Dark Knight Rises contains elements that can seem silly or illogical at times, this specific moment focuses solely on two human adversaries engaging in a life-or-death struggle.

With about an hour and a half left in Christopher Nolan’s long movie, viewers understand Batman won’t perish, but they can’t help wondering due to the intensity of the violence. The dark setting contributes to the bleak atmosphere, as does the image of Catwoman, clearly regretful, watching on.

Batman vs. Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

The movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” carries a somewhat unfavorable preconception. Yet, critics who are its harshest opponents might still acknowledge the film’s impressive fight scenes, particularly those involving Batman. The car chase with the Batmobile is well-executed, and the warehouse brawl is intense, but what stands out most is a specific sequence.

In the film titled Batman v Superman, it’s inevitable that you’ll find a scene where Batman engages in combat with Superman, and this encounter occurs approximately six minutes into the movie. This battle is not overly prolonged, which prevents it from becoming tedious. Additionally, there are diverse aspects (including nods to comic book history) to keep viewers engaged, such as Batman utilizing various weapons. However, the extended fight against Doomsday in the latter part of the film detracts from the intensity of the initial showdown, as labeled by the movie’s title.

Chasing Penguin in The Batman (2022)

Similar to how The Dark Knight Rises features intense action scenes, Matt Reeves’ reboot of The Batman also boasts a gritty physicality in its fight sequences. While the encounters between Batman and the Riddler’s assassin squad, the nightclub brawl, and the debut at the train station are all expertly choreographed, it is the scene involving the Batmobile that truly heightens the adrenaline.

As a long-time fan of Batman and action movies, I found the car chase scene in “The Batman” particularly thrilling due to its raw intensity and vulnerability. Having grown up watching classics like “Bullitt” and “French Connection,” I appreciated the straightforward approach taken in this scene, which stood out among other set pieces in the film.

The Tumbler from the Dark Knight trilogy and the Batmobile from the DCEU always felt invincible, but the vehicle used by Robert Pattinson’s Batman seemed vulnerable – a quality that added some much-needed tension to the scene. This sense of vulnerability gave the chase sequence an edge and made it more immersive, as I found myself genuinely worried about what could happen next. Overall, I believe this approach was essential in creating high stakes for the audience and making the scene truly memorable.
