The A24 Elden Ring movie is real and has a director, but I have no idea how it’s going to work

Approximately a year after FromSoftware’s president Hidetaka Miyazaki hinted at potential collaboration with a strong partner for an Elden Ring adaptation, and George R.R. Martin left fans guessing about its existence, publisher Bandai Namco has officially announced that a movie based on the highly-praised action role-playing game is in development — and they’ve even secured a director for it.

On a Thursday night, Variety announced that the upcoming movie would be live-action, and they’re working on it collaboratively with A24, a renowned film production company.

In addition, it was disclosed that Alex Garland, known for films like Ex Machina, Civil War, and Warfare, is both scripting and directing this production. Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Martin Gerardis, and Vince Gerardis are also involved as producers. George R. R. Martin is set to contribute to the project too; however, we may not see The Winds of Winter anytime soon.

Following this, Bandai Namco confirmed the news via their social media channels, officially disclosing the film’s production by posting an announcement about it on X (Twitter).

Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. and A24 are joining forces with writer and director Alex Garland for an exciting project: transforming the popular video game Elden Ring from FromSoftware Inc. into a live-action movie! We can’t wait to share this incredible universe with fans in a fresh, new way. Keep an eye out – the adventure is just getting started!

For quite some time now, I’ve admired Alex Garland’s creative work; he penned the script for 28 Days Later, a movie that many people, including myself, regard as an exceptional entry in the zombie genre. He also directed critically acclaimed sci-fi films like Ex Machina and Annihilation. The film 2024’s Civil War presented a chilling portrayal of war journalism and societal collapse during armed conflicts. His latest collaboration with Ray Mendoza, Warfare, has received widespread praise for its authentic depiction of the raw, instant fears experienced in combat.

Though I usually appreciate Garland’s work and am a fan of Elden Ring, this news left me feeling puzzled rather than thrilled. The nonlinear narrative style, scarcity of dialogue, esoteric storytelling, and multiple endings in FromSoftware’s latest traditional Soulsborne RPG — similar to its predecessors — make it seem unlikely that such a game would translate well onto the big screen.

As an analyst, I find myself drawn to the idea that Elden Ring could thrive as an animated episodic TV show rather than a video game. The success of shows like Arcane, which adapts League of Legends, demonstrates the potential for such adaptations to captivate audiences. Moreover, animation would beautifully translate the enchanting action and spectacle that Elden Ring offers, given its magic-filled world.

Without a doubt, I’ll be eagerly waiting for its release and hoping it turns out great. Yet, I can’t shake off the feeling that no movie could possibly encapsulate Elden Ring’s enchantment. The exhilaration of stumbling upon new discoveries while traversing a massive landscape, the fun of testing various character builds as you progress, the triumph of overcoming that boss you’ve been struggling with – all these experiences are deeply rooted in the interactivity that makes the best video games truly shine.

By all means, let Garland and A24 give it their best shot! In the meantime, why not jump into Elden Ring and check it out if you haven’t had a chance yet? At the moment, this $60 game is available for as low as $34.79 on Xbox at CDKeys due to an amazing offer, and the PC version can be found for $40.19 at the same store. Additionally, Elden Ring Nightreign, a cooperative roguelike spinoff, will be released on May 30.
