The Accountant 2 Hits Major Box Office Milestone, Surpassing Affleck’s Legacy!

In a remarkable turn of events, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 action-thriller “The Accountant,” titled simply as “The Accountant 2,” has achieved two significant milestones simultaneously. Firstly, it surpassed a domestic box office benchmark, and secondly, it made its way onto a prominent chart.

Starring Ben Affleck reprising his role as the autistic accountant character Christian Wolff, this sequel also brings back Jon Bernthal as his brother Braxton, Cynthia Addai-Robinson as FinCEN Deputy Director Marybeth Medina, and J. K. Simmons as ex-FinCEN director Raymond King.

The release of “The Accountant 2” began with a strong opening weekend, generating $24.5 million in revenue, securing the third spot for the weekend, trailing behind the re-release of “Revenge of the Sith” and the second weekends of “Sinners.

By this coming Saturday morning, according to current projections for “The Accountant 2”, its three-day total at the U.S. box office during its second weekend is expected to reach approximately $9.8 million, representing a decrease of around 60%. This will boost the film’s cumulative domestic gross to an impressive $41.4 million, positioning it as the 10th movie released in 2025 that has surpassed the $40 million mark at the U.S. box office.

Based on The Numbers’ chart tracking a star’s lifetime box office earnings, this implies that the movie is poised to claim a spot among Affleck’s top-earning films domestically. It will surpass over two dozen other titles and take the 20th spot previously held by 2009’s State of Play ($37 million).

It Could Climb A Few More Slots

With its successful passage of a significant domestic benchmark, “The Accountant 2” has already surpassed the earnings of several notable Ben Affleck films, such as “Smokin’ Aces” ($35.7 million) from 2007, “Dazed and Confused” ($8.3 million) from 1993, “The Last Duel” ($10.8 million) from 2021, “School Ties” ($14.7 million) from 1992, and “Jersey Girl” ($25.3 million) from 2004. It is possible that it will continue to grow its earnings, although it must gross an additional $11.1 million to surpass the next highest film on the list, which is “Air” ($52.5 million) from 2023. Here’s a comparison of the five films preceding the new release:

* “The Accountant 2”
* “Smokin’ Aces”
* “Dazed and Confused”
* “The Last Duel”
* “School Ties”
* “Jersey Girl”

Title Domestic Box Office
Changing Lanes (2002) $66.8 million
Field of Dreams (1989 – extra role) $64.5 million
Paycheck (2003) $53.8 million
Forces of Nature (1999) $52.9 million
Air (2023) $52.5 million
The Accountant 2 $41.4 million (est.)

It appears extremely doubtful that “The Accountant 2” (scheduled for release in 2025) will manage to enter the Top 10 highest-grossing films, given that the current range is from “Daredevil” in 2003 ($102.5 million at No. 10) to “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” in 2016 ($330.4 million at No. 1. For context, “Daredevil” had amassed $69.5 million domestically by the end of its second weekend, while “Batman v Superman” had earned $260.4 million).

It Might Not Match The Original

A hurdle for The Accountant 2 to keep rising in Ben Affleck’s rankings could be that it encounters significant competition from other films during the rest of the month. In May, we have new releases like the horror sequel Final Destination: Bloodlines, Tom Cruise’s action movie Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and Disney’s live-action remake Lilo & Stitch. If these films perform well, it might prevent The Accountant 2 from surpassing the earnings of its original movie, which made $86.3 million at the domestic box office.
