It turned out to be quite unexpected when Ben Affleck took on the role of an action hero in The Accountant, but when it was first released about a decade ago, it became a surprise hit with audiences who really enjoyed it. This success sparked interest among fans for a sequel, and eventually, their wishes came true.
One potential cause for the delay in making a sequel might have been that although audiences enjoyed ‘The Accountant’, critics had a more reserved response. The sequel aims to surpass the original in every aspect, and it seems it has already won over the critics.
The First Accountant Movie Was Not A Hit With Critics
In the year 2016, the movie “The Accountant” managed to impress slightly over half of the critics who watched it. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a rating of 53%, which classifies it as a “rotten” film. However, the audience’s score is a commendable 77%. The review for “The Accountant” by TopMob was generally average, much like many other reviews.
The second installment of “The Accountant” has surpassed its predecessor in terms of critical acclaim. With a Tomatometer score of 76%, it qualifies as “Certified Fresh”. Our review of the sequel shares this sentiment, praising it as an improvement upon the original. Additionally, the film boasts an audience rating of 92%, though it’s important to note that these scores come from viewers who attended early Thursday previews, which may have biased their enjoyment of the movie.
The Accountant 2’s Box Office May Be A Different Story
Although the positive reviews and audience reactions for The Accountant 2 are encouraging, the main concern is whether the sequel will outperform its predecessor financially. Regrettably, the current figures seem to be a hindrance in this aspect.
It’s anticipated that “Sinners” will continue its victory streak on the box office for a second week, following an impressive debut weekend with minimal drop-off throughout the week. On the other hand, “The Accountant 2” is projected to earn between $20 and $25 million during its opening weekend. To match the $24.7 million that the first installment made in its opening weekend, it will need to hit the higher end of this projected range.
Regardless of whether The Accountant 2 manages to match its predecessor’s $155 million global box office, it won’t yield the same level of success this time due to a significantly higher production cost. The budget for The Accountant 2 is reportedly around $80 million, which is almost twice as much as the original film. Consequently, it will have to outperform the first movie substantially to achieve the same level of profitability.
Initially, I didn’t anticipate that the first ‘Accountant’ movie would turn out to be a blockbuster hit. Who knows, maybe the upcoming sequel will prove me wrong and surpass expectations just like its predecessor did.
