The Accountant 2 – REVIEW

In the improbable scenario where an accountant transforms into a formidable crime-fighter, be it day or night, we’re now introducing the sequel to the 2016 film, “The Accountant 2“. The protagonist, Christian Wolff, portrayed by Ben Affleck, continues his unique lifestyle residing in an Airstream trailer. However, he is soon pulled into another thrilling installment of high-octane action.

The story commences with an intriguing introduction, where JK Simmons, now a private investigator, is probing into the mysterious vanishing of a family of three. This investigation leads him to a seedy bar, where he crosses paths with Anais (Daniela Pineda). A violent altercation ensues in the restroom, not over a functioning stall, but for survival against two armed assailants. He is eventually felled by a sniper’s bullet. The climactic moment unfolds at the morgue, where a government agent named Marybeth Median (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) spots the message ‘Find the accountant’ scribbled on Simmons’ arm with a pen. This ominous note can only pertain to Wolff, who she has been pursuing relentlessly for years.

In this sequel, instead of focusing mainly on action, it’s funnier than the original film. The story revolves around Wolff attending a speed dating event, where he has cleverly manipulated the system to attract numerous women. However, his neurodivergent nature makes it challenging for him to interact with them effectively. To make things even more implausible, Wolff’s unique ability to connect events and details proves useful to Median, leading them to form a partnership. This duo is joined by Wolff’s brother Braxton, played by Jon Bernthal. The bond between the brothers is the film’s main draw, with their witty sibling banter creating an intriguing dynamic – Wolff’s intellect against Braxton’s brute strength making for a potent combination. Scenes featuring their rivalry are particularly engaging, but the action sequences fail to impress, given the current high standards set by films like John Wick and Gareth Evans’ actioners. Unfortunately, The Accountant 2 doesn’t quite measure up in this regard, especially when considering its complex plot involving child trafficking, illegal immigration, a female assassin, and an underdeveloped villain.

There are delightful instances of humor, such as when a group of teenage autistic prodigies track down a witness’ lost photos, or when a brain-injured hospital patient develops unusual skills reminiscent of Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Wolff meticulously analyzing a pizza business owner’s accounts. However, what truly makes this engaging is the deep brotherly bond that they share.
