Warning! Minor spoilers ahead for The Accountant 2
In the making of the movie, director Gavin O’Connor disclosed that the Disney reference (Easter egg) was added without the studio’s approval. The action film, a sequel to 2016’s “The Accountant,” produced by Amazon MGM Studios, brings back Ben Affleck as mathematical genius Christian Wolff. This time, he partners with his brother, Brax (played by Jon Bernthal), to unravel the murder of the Treasury chief. The sequel is packed with action, and one less intense scene includes a surprising appearance of a lightsaber when Christian communicates with Brax using it as a phone.
In a recent chat with THR, director O’Connor disclosed that the lightsaber glimpsed in “The Accountant 2” was an impromptu inclusion. The director spotted a chance to add intrigue to the specific scene regarding Christian’s character, and a lightsaber seemed fitting for this purpose. However, an issue arose as O’Connor hadn’t obtained Disney’s approval for the lightsaber prior to filming the scene. Fortunately, Disney eventually gave their consent, and here is what O’Connor had to say about the scene:
(Laughs.) It’s quite amusing that you mention it. In the script, Chris contacts Brax from his bed, and upon arriving at the set that morning, I found myself thinking, “This can be even better. How can we continue developing the characters?” I always strive to develop the characters more. So when I got to the set, my prop master, J.P. Jones, was the first person I approached. I said, “I require a lightsaber. Find me one quickly so I can extend the scene until later in the day.
As a matter of fact, we never bothered to ask Disney for permission. I just went ahead and filmed it without getting their approval. Luckily, they turned out to be understanding about the whole situation, but in all honesty, I hadn’t even considered asking for their permission beforehand. We simply filmed it.
What This Means For The Accountant 2
The Response To The Ben Affleck Sequel Explained
As a movie enthusiast, I always make it a point to understand the intricacies of filmmaking, and one such aspect is the use of copyrighted materials. Obtaining permission from the rights holder is usually necessary, often involving a fee. With Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, all things Star Wars, including the lightsaber copyright and trademark, fall under their jurisdiction. Since The Accountant 2 isn’t a Disney production, incorporating a lightsaber without permission could potentially lead to legal complications. However, Disney has shown leniency with the lightsaber rights in the past, as evident by its appearance in Free Guy (2021).
The meticulous work put into detail and character development in The Accountant 2 seems to be yielding favorable results. The reaction to this sequel has been overwhelmingly positive so far, with critics and viewers giving it a combined score of 78% and 93% on Rotten Tomatoes respectively. In his review for ScreenRant, Graeme Guttman rated the film 7 out of 10, commending the movie for its enhanced emphasis on the relationship between Christian and Brax.
It becomes clear why The Accountant 2 was produced when Bernthal and Affleck share the screen again. Their on-screen chemistry is palpable, as Affleck’s subdued, pragmatic character clashes dramatically with Brax’s aggressive and volatile personality.
Our Take On The Lightsaber In The Accountant 2
O’Connor’s Approach Elevated The Movie
The scene from “Accountant 2” in question could have been effective without the lightsaber, but its presence serves as a comedic element and provides additional insights into Christian’s character. Essentially, the lightsaber doesn’t just provide information; it enhances the scene, which might be one reason the sequel has received more favorable reviews than a typical action movie.
The ending of “The Accountant 2” hints at potential further tales, and writer-director O’Connor has expressed interest in creating a third movie. However, whether another chapter materializes depends on the film’s box office success, and it remains uncertain at this point. If “The Accountant 2” serves as any guide, O’Connor won’t hesitate to push boundaries should he be given the opportunity to expand Christian’s narrative.
