The Acolyte star breaks silence on “hyper-conservative bigotry and vitriol” amid cancellation

As a film enthusiast who has been following the Star Wars universe for decades, it is disheartening to see the cancellation of The Acolyte and the toxicity that Amandla Stenberg and her co-star Lee Jung-jae have faced since its announcement. It’s unfortunate that in today’s world, talented artists like Stenberg are subjected to intolerable racism and vitriol, simply for taking on a role in a highly anticipated series.

As a devoted cinemaphile, I’ve been reflecting on the recent developments surrounding the Star Wars series, The Acolyte, and its subsequent cancellation. Notably, Amandla Stenberg, who plays both Osha and Mae in the show, has shared insights into her journey since the project was first announced.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice the significant wave of harmful online conversations surrounding this incredible series. Earlier on, Amandla Stenberg shared that she’s endured an overwhelming flood of intolerable racism ever since its launch.

Currently, on Instagram Stories, Stenberg expresses her gratitude and affection towards those who have supported her and the show by acknowledging them and offering her love and encouragement.

Stenberg stated that the cancellation didn’t come as a big surprise to her, stating: “I exist within my own bubble of reality, but for those unaware, there’s been an outpouring of hostility we’ve encountered since the show was just a concept, before it even premiered.”

She added that the cast and crew started “experiencing a rampage of, I would say, hyper-conservative bigotry and vitriol, prejudiced hatred and hateful language towards us”.

Stenberg went on to say, “When I started working here, it had a profound impact on me. Though I expected it, I couldn’t truly grasp the sensation until I was experiencing it myself.”

On the other hand, I’ve managed to work through those emotions by expressing them openly on multiple occasions.

In other words, I found myself in a position where adhering to my moral principles, beliefs, and values was not just an option, but a necessity.

Regardless of the mistreatment she encountered, Stenberg remarked: “Being a part of this world has been an extraordinary privilege and long-held dream of mine.”

Although I’m undeniably sad that the show has been cancelled and disappointed that we couldn’t provide more for those who are passionate about it, I can’t help but feel a sense of lightheartedness and joy knowing that I was part of something loved by many and that people were so enthusiastically engaged.

Previously, Lee Jung-jae, who starred alongside Stenberg, expressed his surprise at the series’ cancellation. He also hinted at hoping for potential adjustments or changes in the future.
