As Susanna Reid, with years of early morning alarm calls under my belt, I can confidently say that sleep will be the last thing on my mind during the US election week. Ed Balls, our political guru, and I are set to fly straight to Washington DC, where we’ll immerse ourselves in the electrifying atmosphere and present the election results program on Wednesday morning.
Add Good Morning Britain to your watchlist
Talk us through GMB’s US election plans?
After appearing on Good Morning Britain on November 4th, Ed Balls and I will immediately jet off to Washington DC. We’re looking forward to immersing ourselves in the city’s ambiance. Later, we’ll be back on solid ground, delivering the election results program on the Wednesday morning.
You’re used to a 3.40am alarm call. With the time difference, you won’t get much sleep…
This week is shaping up to be one where restful sleep becomes less of a priority, as your body seems to be flooded with an unrelenting surge of adrenaline and cortisol!
What does Ed bring to the show?
At such a young age, he’s deeply immersed in the realm of politics, a seasoned political figure indeed! His expertise isn’t limited to British politics; as a Senior Fellow at Harvard, he also boasts a comprehensive understanding of American politics. He promises an insightful perspective on our news coverage, backed by his extensive experience.
Of course, you co-hosted the last US election with Piers Morgan…
In 2016 and 2020, we had two elections, and during the first one, Piers, who had a close connection with Donald Trump, predicted his victory quite early on. He stated, “This man shouldn’t be underestimated. He’s a winner. He knows how to seal a deal.” At that time, Piers was an exception among media commentators, as many believed Hillary Clinton would emerge victorious. However, Piers remained firm in his convictions.
How have you prepared this time round?
I’ve been delving into information regarding Kamala Harris, particularly her tenure in San Francisco, keeping tabs on the swing states and their upcoming announcements, following updates on Trump and his legal battles, and staying informed on the latest briefings for our invited guests.
An early-morning slot on Good Morning Britain might be ideal – assuming the results are announced promptly.
2020 saw an unexpected twist in the cinematic landscape, one that wasn’t immediately apparent until a few days had passed. As a film critic immersed in the digital realm, I often find myself grappling with the attention my reviews garner on social media. I won’t let the vitriolic comments of internet trolls sway me, but I do value the insights and experiences shared by viewers, especially during challenging times like lockdown and Partygate. The public’s perception of me pales in comparison to the rich tapestry of films I have the privilege to analyze. As for managing my digital footprint, I curate my feed, focusing on the discussions that resonate most deeply with my perspective as a critic.
