The Agency’s Katherine Waterston: ‘For all the macho appeal, James Bond fans sit through a lot of romance’

As a movie buff who’s seen more James Bond films than I care to admit and has spent countless hours immersed in the world of espionage, The Agency seems like a refreshing blend of my favorite genres. The addition of a love story adds depth to the characters and provides an emotional undercurrent that keeps you invested beyond the action sequences.

The latest series on Paramount Plus, titled “The Agency,” introduces Michael Fassbender as a secretive CIA operative. This show promises the adrenaline-pumping excitement, suspense, and mystery that is synonymous with the spy genre.

Yet, this tale can be seen as a love story in numerous aspects, where the protagonist, Martian, is compelled to relinquish his covert existence and depart from his beloved. When she resurfaces, their affection is rekindled, placing his profession, true identity, and objective at odds with his emotions.

Regarding the blend of espionage thrills and romantic elements in the show, Waterston commented: “Perhaps it’s understood that beneath the tough, James Bond-like exterior, there’s an appreciation for the softer side of things. It seems those drawn to the daring stunts and action might have found themselves sitting through some romance. I don’t believe audiences object to this, do you?

The program maintains a delightful equilibrium. Just when you feel you’ve figured out its genre, it unexpectedly veers off course, offering an emotional or narrative twist. This keeps things interesting and fresh, which I find commendable.

In the captivating series I’m referring to, I find myself drawn to the mesmerizing performance of Waterston as Naomi, a former handler of Fassbender’s character, Martian, who holds the position of a skilled Operations Officer in the CIA.

As a cinephile eagerly awaiting my next binge-worthy series, I’m thrilled to share that come Saturday, 30th November, I’ll be diving into an exhilarating new show – not a mere creation of its own, but a brilliant adaptation from the acclaimed French drama Le Bureau des Legendes. The masterminds behind this captivating tale are Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, serving as both writers and executive producers. I can hardly wait to stream it on Paramount Plus!

The principal actors joining the cast are John Magaro, Alex Reznik, Andrew Brooke, Harriet Sansom Harris, India Fowler, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, and Reza Brojerdi. Additionally, we have recurring stars like Adam Nagaitis, Ambreen Razia, Bilal Hasna, David Harewood, Kurt Egyiawan, Ray BLK, Sabrina Wu, and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.

Waterston primarily gained recognition through her roles in movies like Steve Jobs, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Alien: Covenant, and Babylon, but she also ventured into the world of espionage by appearing as a guest star in Slow Horses’ third season.
