As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I can wholeheartedly appreciate the unique blend of sci-fi and horror that the Alien franchise offers. However, it’s always intriguing to stumble upon films that buck tradition and find their way into our hearts during the holiday season.
Although the Alien series typically isn’t linked to festive occasions, it boasts a pair of films set during Christmas. Generally, when it comes to science fiction or horror movies, they can be enjoyed at any time of the year, with the exception being the holiday season. Halloween is the most notable deviation from this trend, as it often features monsters and aliens in films screened in October, not just the iconic Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise.
Contrarily, certain sci-fi/horror films deviate from the norm by either premiering around the holiday season or being set during Christmas, or both. The Alien series is one such exception. While most movies in this franchise steer clear of the Christmas season, two have intentionally incorporated a hint of Christmas spirit into their narratives.
Prometheus Takes Place During Christmas
In 2012, Ridley Scott reintroduced the Alien saga with the prequel titled “Prometheus.” The story unfolds in the year 2089 and focuses on a team exploring the moon LV-223 to uncover the origins of an ancient race called the Engineers. These beings could potentially be linked to life that existed on Earth thousands of years ago. As an epic space voyage, it takes four years for the ship “Prometheus” to reach its destination. The entire crew was in a state of suspended animation during this journey, awakening only upon arrival at LV-223 in December 2093.
For the crew aboard the Prometheus, their journey to LV-223 turns out to be anything but a cheerful and festive holiday, as the mission spirals into chaos, leading them into conflict with an awakened Engineer species and other hostile alien lifeforms reminiscent of the terrifying xenomorphs from the Alien franchise. Despite the film’s backdrop taking place during Christmas time, it doesn’t emphasize any significant connections to the holiday. However, earlier movies in the series have explored these Christmas themes more explicitly.
Aliens Vs. Predator Requiem Was Released At Christmas
The film titled “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” continues immediately from where “Alien vs. Predator” concludes, with an egg hatching to create a hybrid creature known as a “Predalien,” causing the Predator spaceship to crash in Gunnison, Colorado. As a xenomorph infestation breaks out in this peaceful suburban neighborhood, a solitary Predator (nicknamed “Wolf” due to his resemblance to Harvey Keitel’s character from “Pulp Fiction“) lands on Earth to eliminate the xenomorph threat and preserve the secret of the Predators from humanity. This doesn’t sound like the storyline for a Christmas movie, but 20th Century Fox didn’t seem to mind, releasing “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” in cinemas on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2007.
Although the film “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” doesn’t contain typical Christmas story elements, its promotional materials heavily emphasized the holiday season connection. For instance, the poster and trailers for the movie were accompanied by the tagline, “This Christmas, there will be no peace on Earth.” Moreover, the trailer featured the timeless holiday tune “Silent Night” in its soundtrack. Consequently, despite not falling into the traditional category of a Christmas film, 20th Century Fox’s marketing team put considerable effort into portraying it as one.
An Alien-Themed Christmas Movie Could Be A Unique Entry In The Franchise
Although not typically linked to the holiday spirit, films like Prometheus and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem aren’t traditional Christmas movies, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of the Alien franchise creating a movie set during the festive season. While Christmas is often symbolized by happiness, warmth, kindness, and unity, many genre films have managed to carve out a niche for themselves by presenting intense life-or-death narratives within a Christmas backdrop.
Die Hard is undeniably the quintessential action film for Christmas, while Terrifier 3 promises a gruesome dose of violence and gore during the holiday season, featuring Art the Clown’s slashing rampage. An Alien movie set on Earth over the Christmas season could be a unique addition to the franchise, blending its themes of terror and survival with the festive atmosphere. Previous Alien installments such as Prometheus and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem only hinted at Christmas, but a film that fully immerses itself in the holiday could deliver both terrifying horror and entertaining sci-fi within an R-rated Christmas movie.
