In games, overcoming survival challenges is commonplace, but 11 bit studios’ upcoming game, The Alters, elevates this concept to an extremely intimate level. Unlike other games, surviving in The Alters isn’t merely about enduring the unknown; it’s about facing yourself in the most profoundly personal way possible – one-on-one. Given that making life-or-death choices alongside alternate versions of oneself is as intimate as it gets, what could be more personal than that? The protagonist, Jan Dolski, is an ordinary worker who miraculously survives a crash landing on a distant, unforgiving planet. Stranded and alone, he must perform tasks beyond his capabilities – managing a massive mobile base designed for an entire crew while evading the merciless, blazing sun. His only hope lies in the Alters – alternate versions of himself, shaped by choices he didn’t make, each with distinct abilities, memories, and lives.
In the new trailer, it’s hinted that collaborating with these distinct Jans is far from simple. They aren’t identical copies; some followed unique paths and view the original Jan’s decisions with sympathy. Others surpassed him, living lives he could never experience – and now, they might doubt his courage to lead.
However, when survival is on the line, all else becomes secondary. Regardless of personal feelings, they’ll need to collaborate somehow.
The Alters seamlessly combines an engaging, self-developing storyline – where decisions carry significant weight – with elements of survival, exploration, resource collection, and base construction and administration.
In 2025, you can expect “The Alters” to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and Microsoft Store), and subscribers of Game Pass will also have access to it. A demo is already available for you to try out.
