The Amazing Spider-Man’s Andrew Garfield Would “100 Percent” Return to Marvel Under These Conditions

The Amazing Spider-Man's Andrew Garfield Would "100 Percent" Return to Marvel Under These Conditions

As a gamer who has lived through the golden age of Spidey, witnessing the rise and fall (and rise again?) of Andrew Garfield‘s Peter Parker feels like reliving my own superhero journey. It’s been quite the rollercoaster – much like when Green Goblin ambushed us from behind a corner in that old PlayStation game.

Andrew Garfield, who played Spider-Man in “The Amazing Spider-Man” movies, made a comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the film “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” His character, Peter Parker 2, was a reflection of his past struggles as Spider-Man during the time when Sony’s standalone superhero films were competing with Marvel Studios’ interconnected series.

Speaking candidly, Garfield shared that playing Spider-Man: No Way Home provided him with a sense of relief, as it allowed him to discuss and rectify some leftover concerns regarding his departure from the Spider-Man franchise. In the 2010s, Garfield was set to lead an entire Spider-Man Universe franchise that Sony envisioned competing with the MCU. This plan encompassed a Sinister Six film, spinoffs for characters like Black Cat and Silver Sable, and Amazing Spider-Man 3 to conclude the trilogy. However, the missteps in Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) dashed these dreams, prompting Sony to shift gears and reboot Spider-Man within the MCU, with a fresh face taking on the role.

Ever since the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have been brainstorming theories about how Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man and Tobey Maguire’s versions of the characters could all coexist within the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse, potentially through different upcoming projects. Many enthusiasts have expressed a desire to see Garfield step into the role of the current era’s Spider-Man in Sony’s spinoff films like Venom (played by Tom Hardy), Morbius (portrayed by Jared Leto), or Aaron Taylor Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter. However, there has been no concrete development to connect these movies into a unified universe – largely due to the absence of Spider-Man himself in any of them.

In a recent conversation with Esquire, Andrew Garfield reaffirmed his intention to play Spider-Man again, but only if they come up with an appealing and thrilling project for him.

Garfield stated that he would gladly return if the opportunity aligned with his values, added to the existing culture, and presented an innovative, intriguing, and unique idea. He expressed affection for the character and found fulfillment in bringing happiness, stating that his happiness mirrors the joy he brings.

Andrew Garfield: The Ultimate Spider-Man?

2024 marked the return of Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series with an innovative twist: instead of gaining his powers in youth, Peter Parker became Spider-Man when he was middle-aged, married to Mary Jane and a father of two. This fresh take has resonated strongly with mature Spider-Man fans who have longed for Peter’s character development, having patiently waited over the years.

Should Sony’s previous attempts at spinoffs not succeed, it presents an excellent opportunity to reintroduce Spider-Man as a self-contained series, with Garfield being ideally suited for the mature role. Moreover, there’s a possibility that both Garfield and Maguire could reprise their roles in the upcoming Marvel Multiverse event, Avengers: Secret Wars, which may serve as a conclusion to the storyline they began in No Way Home.

The MCU’s Spider-Man 4 is current in development.
