Last year, the anime version of “The Apothecary Diaries” made its debut and swiftly soared in popularity, eventually ranking as one of the top anime series of 2023. This surge in popularity led to confirmation that the show featuring characters Maomao and Jinshi would receive a second season. Recently, we at ComicBook were fortunate enough to attend this year’s Anime Expo, where we interviewed several key creators and voice actors within the anime industry. In regards to “The Apothecary Diaries”, we sat down with director Norihiro Naganuma to discuss the development of the first season and how it compares to the original source material.
As a long-time fan of manga and anime, I was thrilled to have the chance to interview director Norihiro Naganuma at this year’s Anime Expo about his work on “The Apothecary Diaries.” With a background in both animation and literature, it was fascinating to hear how he approached adapting a novel for the small screen.
The Apothecary Diaries: Anime Vs. Novel
It’s less common for anime adaptations to be based on novels, compared to when they draw their stories from manga or light novels. However, “The Apothecary Diaries” initially debuted as a novel in 2012 and subsequently gained a manga and light novel series.

This popular anime series follows Maomao, a skilled herbalist who finds herself working as a servant in the palace. Despite her longing for life outside the perfumed halls, she’s not content with a life of drudgery! By breaking a curse that affects the imperial heirs, Maomao catches the eye of the handsome eunuch Jinshi and is promoted to food taster. However, Jinshi has more plans for Maomao, and soon she’s back to concocting potions and…unraveling mysteries?!
