During its tenure on The CW, The Arrowverse exhibited some unconventional decisions. Among the more memorable instances were the deceptive character deaths, where a character seems alive and well, only to perish unexpectedly. On Arrow, both Laurel Lance and Quentin Lance experienced this type of death, but their characters found a way to return by the show’s end, suggesting that the creators regretted their initial choices. However, one character from Arrow who was killed off is unlikely to ever make a comeback, as the show moves too swiftly to undo its actions with this particular character.
In the fifth season of Arrow, the character Vincent Sobel, who is also known as Vigilante, stirs up some trouble within Star City. Initially, his presence adds intrigue to the storyline involving him and Prometheus. However, after revealing his identity, he ends up causing more problems than solutions, leading writer James Gunn to alter the character’s direction in Peacemaker.
Vigilante Is Better Off as a Mystery in Arrow
From the perspective of a movie critic, I’d say:
“In the fifth season of Arrow, two enigmatic antagonists make their appearance: Vigilante and Prometheus. The latter harbors a deep-seated grudge against Oliver Queen, while the former gradually develops one due to the Green Arrow consistently foiling his efforts to eliminate corrupt individuals. Despite their masked identities, Oliver and the team can’t quite figure out who these newcomers are. However, a significant clue emerges with the introduction of District Attorney Adrian Chase, who is known as Vigilante in the comics. Initially, it seems that this lawyer believes Green Arrow isn’t doing enough for the city and decides to take matters into his own hands. Yet, this theory proves short-lived when Prometheus is unmasked as none other than Adrian Chase himself.
With just one enigma remaining, there aren’t many individuals matching Vigilante’s profile. Interestingly, this scarcity is intentional as he is revealed to be an old love interest of Dinah Drake, Vincent Sobel, who was affected by the particle accelerator blast and now possesses a healing ability. This newfound power has emboldened him to patrol the streets and fight crime. For some unknown reason, he believes his mission can progress by working for a criminal mastermind, Cayden James, who is determined to bring down Team Arrow.

Vincent finds enlightenment in his bond with Dinah, leading him to infiltrate James’s organization undercover. He shares intel with her and their associates, but eventually, his deception comes back to haunt him. James apprehends Vigilante and employs Black Siren’s powers directly into his ear, an ordeal that overpowers his regenerative abilities. Vigilante perishes, leaving Dinah heartbroken and determined to bring down James. Regrettably, although Vigilante’s demise serves a purpose, the portrayal of the character overall misses the mark, lacking genuine motivation. However, Gunn is committed to avoiding similar pitfalls in his interpretation of the character.
Peacemaker Makes Vigilante’s Beliefs Very Clear
Following Vigilante’s demise in the Arrowverse, the anti-hero makes a comeback in the series ‘Peacemaker’. In this installment, he is identified as Adrian Chase and harbors a strong desire to join forces with his older brother’s friend, Peacemaker, to combat crime. However, Peacemaker remains reluctant towards him due to concerns about Chase’s mental stability. Despite this, Vigilante becomes entangled in an A.R.G.U.S. mission aimed at eliminating the butterflies. Rather than blending into the background, he assumes command, repeatedly rescuing Peacemaker, even going as far as taking the impact of a grenade explosion on one occasion.
In a remarkable turn of events, the pinnacle of Vigilante’s exploits transpired during his tenure at Evergreen Corrections Center. Determined to confront White Dragon, Peacemaker’s father, he intentionally got himself arrested. Once inside, he boldly approached White Dragon’s table, challenging his prejudiced companions. In a swift and decisive move, Vigilante brutally subdues them, delivering a chilling message to White Dragon who was left in awe of the ferocity of his adversary. This single scene surpasses any portrayal of Vigilante within the Arrowverse, and it’s evident that Gunn will strive to outdo himself when the character reappears in the second season of Peacemaker.
Arrow is streaming on Netflix, while Peacemaker is available on HBO Max.
